Monday TechQuestions #12
01.30.06 (3:32 pm)   [edit]
Q:
I'm wanting to purchase a new PC in the next few months. I have heard good things about Apple's new iMac's but I have been using Windows all my life. Should I buy a mac or stick with PC's? What's your opinion?

A:
I myself am very excited about what Apple are doing with their new iMac's and their new Mac Book Pro laptop computer. These days, Mac's are at a pretty good price these days which makes them more competitive with the PC, but then come to think of it I am also quite excited to see Windows Vista when it ships late this year.

I have been using Microsoft Windows all my life also just like you and I am thinking about sticking with the PC personally as I can build a new PC much cheaper than I can buy a Mac for.

That said, I believe it will all come down to personal preference. Since you are a windows user and you are used to the Windows interface, it might be an idea to just stick with Windows since all your applications would most definately be windows based anyway.

If you are feeling a little adventurous, buying a Mac and learning MacOSX probably won't take you as long as if you were learning windows from scratch as Apple do a great job simplifying many difficult tasks and they have a very simple and clean OS so learning is easy.
It's all up to you, but in my opinion since you've been using windows for quite a while, I would suggest you just stick with that as it will be cheaper for you initially (You won't have to rebuy Mac versions of all your software).

I hope that was helpful, be sure to check back as I cover alot of information here on my blog regarding what both Apple and Microsoft are doing with both their products. Thanks for your question.

Great post! I had that same question recently but came to my own conclusion ... I'm to po' for a shiny Mac at the moment. Very unbiased for the giant Apple nut that you are ;)

Learning enough about Mac OS to start using it takes minutes. I've used both in the last few years and to me there's no comparison as far as elegant ease of use.

Plus? no viruses, adware, spyware, ever. And Macs come with so much useable software, I know many "regular" users who use their computers every day for things like intertnet access, photo storing, word processing, accounting and the like who will never have to buy more software since apple offers so many automatic updates to their programs.

I still love to get Windows users to buy the minis even though they don't use the dual core processors. They're plenty fast for most folks.
