02.25.06 (2:52 pm) [edit]
|
Hey guys, I have been planning changes to my blog over the last few weeks. tBlog has been good but I have come to really love the flexibility and clear looks of wordpress. I am really excited to continue blogging and making posts, and I will be sure to redirect my old blog to this new blog address. I hope you all keep checking out my blog from time to time. I have really appreciated all the support I have gotten over the last year or so. Thanks again. Looks like I’ll be sticking around on wordpress for some time. My new blog URL is justinb.wordpress.com. I have added a page redirect on this post so visiting my old blog should take you to my new blog, but if you are reading this post, then it obviously didn't work. Be sure to check out my new blog, its still fun and interesting..just a new location. Remember im at wordpress now. Thanks guys.

Monday TechQuestions #14
02.20.06 (6:52 pm) [edit]
|
Well another week, another round of questions. Q: Just a quick question. Just wondering what your opinion is on why flickr (online photo sharing site) hasn't gotten into online video like such sites as YouTube? What do you think? A: Well thanks for your curiosity on what I think. Flickr is an interesting site and have really done a great job with the idea of online photo sharing. Flickr has become quite widely used, but the idea of why they haven't decided to include video into their site has floated around the net for a while. Im not really sure why they haven't implemented a video section to the site like other sites, but they are doing probably the best job regarding photos anywhere online at the moment i believe.
Im not an expert on business, but maybe they will think about it and decide about it in the future.
Thanks guys.

Found two papers I wrote last year!
02.16.06 (10:37 am) [edit]
|
Hey guys, I was looking through a few documents on my computer the other day and found two papers I wrote last year. I thought people may have some interest in these so I decided to let you guys know about them and give you the links to them to check them out.
Migrating from Windows to Linux - The Complete Guide Open Source Databases (right-click, 'save target as...') - OSD.doc (96kb) Anybody interested in the functionality or power of particular open source databases or ever wanted to switch from Windows to Linux, be sure to check these two papers out. My OSD paper was a research paper for university and is fairly accurate (scored HD - 92% for that paper).
So there we go, they're out there, check em out if ur interested. Thanks guys.

Monday TechQuestions #13 - iPod Nano video rumor
02.13.06 (9:26 am) [edit]
I unfortunately missed posting #13 last week as I was just so busy, so here's Monday TechQuestions #13 this week (better late than never right!).
Q:
I have a quick question for ya. Will there be a new firmware update for the iPod Nano released which will add video playback functionality? I have heard this from a number of Apple & iPod rumor sites but just wondering if there was any truth in the story. As a Nano owner myself, I think it would be cool to see.
A:
Well thanks for your question annonymous. I have also heard these rumors that Apple will be releasing new updated firmware for the iPod Nano but I am pretty confident in saying that Apple has not yet revealed any information to the public regarding such an update. I agree with you, I do own a Nano and I think it could be cool to see video playback on the device, even if the screen size is only 1.5" or so but I think this rumor definately has little truth to it (for now).
Maybe sometime we'll hear something from Apple regarding this but in the meantime, why not check out some open source methods to getting video playback on your iPod. One such project that springs to mind is the iPodLinux project. These guys have re-written the linux kernel to run on iPod hardware to carry out tasks as video playback which you might be interested in. Be sure to check that one out.
Thanks for your questions, and remember to keep them coming. There's no Monday TechQuestion's segment without the input from you guys, and I do appreciate the effort you go through to come up with interesting questions you might want answered.
Thanks guys.

Quick update!
02.10.06 (2:13 pm) [edit]
Hey guys,
Work for me these past few weeks has been so busy and I haven't really had the chance to just sit down and do nothing, let alone come up with new content for a new post here on my blog. I know I missed this monday's Tech Questions (i don't know if anybody even cares lol) but for those who were looking forward to that post, I do apoligize. Putting my real world life first has been my priority lately lol.
I'm starting back at University again soon, semester begins for me end of Feb so looking forward to that...more work and more stress, but I like it. Last year this year (unless for some unforseen circumstance) which is great and have been looking forward to this year for quite some time.
I still haven't got my notebook computer back yet from repairs which is such a pain in the ass. I never realized how much I relied upon it until it was gone. Nevermind, i'll get over it. Should have it back next week sometime if Acer get their act together which will be nice.
So things have been very busy for me lately but I do hope to get this monday's tech question written up and out on time this week for those who were interested. I'm not dead or anything, but thought i'd just check in and give you guys an update on where I'm at with things at the moment. Thanks guys!

Creating my own blog - My pet project
02.07.06 (8:33 pm) [edit]
Hey guys. I know I haven't posted in a few days but I've been real busy. Finally have a chance to sit down and post today so that's something I guess.
As many of you know, I am a computer science student so I'm always playing around with code and whatever, but the past few days I've been scraping the rust off of my PHP skills. I remember everything I used to know now and have started writing my own weblog from scratch.
Its a really cool project. I have my blog here which is good and all, but hosting it on tBlog has its limitations other tBloggers are only too familiar with. So I decided to write my own blog from scratch which means I can put everything in that I've always wanted from a blog and customize it just the way I like. Custom style sheets, limitless PHP code coupled with a MySQL database and free HTML design are just some of the great benifits of writing your own blog instead of using an existing CMS (Content Management Service) such as tBlog.
What Im writing is kind of a blog, but kinda so much more. Traditional blogs can only be posted to by the owner of that particular blog. Sure people can comment a post, but they can't make a seperate post themselves on the same blog. My idea will change all that and take inspiration from successful community based online sites such as Digg.com where the users have all the power.
If I can write it good, and figure out how I am going to host it, I will start using that instead of this one here (I'll redirect don't worry) but who knows, we'll see what happens.
So that's what I've been up to these past few days (besides work anyway) so thought i'd let you guys know.

Pixel Art - More to it than meets the eye
02.06.06 (12:03 pm) [edit]
Im not sure how many of you out there are familiar with pixel art, but if you've ever played a game in your life you will no doubt have seen it. For those who aren't exactly sure what pixel art is, it is art created on the computer through the use of raster graphics software that allows images to be edited on the pixel level. Graphics in most old computer games or even in Game Boy games are considered pixel art. No doubt if you've ever used software such as Adobe Photoshop you'll have some understanding.
Its not exactly something thats easy to get into and is quite difficult for a beginner to pick up and learn, but with time and practice you can pull off some really cool looking graphics for use in practically anything you want. Pixel art has widely become adopted by community based 'meeting' sites such as online hotel (or something like that) were characters and backgrounds are all pixelated.
If you were interested in getting into this difficult craft, then look no further than Derek Yu's excellent tutorial site on pixel art. Still don't really know whats its all about, just google 'pixel art' and see what you find.

Playing with Photo Story 3
02.04.06 (4:48 pm) [edit]
|
I recently began playing with a product Microsoft released just recently called Photo Story 3 for Windows. Photo Story 3 allows you to create video slideshows or 'stories' with your photo collection and add all kinds of transitional effects, text & text effects, themes and even set it to a musical soundtrack.
This video clip I did with a few photos I took of Melbourne last week was fairly basic with a few transitional effects set to a musical soundtrack, but the clip gives you a good indication of what you can expect to acomplish with the software. Enough of me hyping it up, go try it out for yourself. For a quick 5MB download, its well worth it if you have a large photo collection you want to share with friends and family in a different way.

Britney Spears makes sitcom comeback
02.02.06 (10:09 pm) [edit]
I got quite a response from people following my last post's footnote regarding Britney Spears making an appearance on Will & Grace that I just had to do a follow up.
After giving birth in 2005, Britney Spears is on her way to a comeback giving her first public performance in over a year. Spears will guest star in the April 13th Episode of Will & Grace in which she will play the role of a christian conservative sidekick to Sean Hayes' character Jack with her playing out most of her scenes with Sean. This will mark Britney's return to acting since taking part in her 2002 film 'Crossroads' which received luke-warm critical reviews.
Nonetheless, For any Will & Grace fan (myself included) this will be very interesting to watch and we will see if motherhood helps her acting talent at all. She's not the worst actor to ever grace the screen, but we shall see what kind of perfomance she dishes out for us on the April 13 ep.
I thought i'd go a little into this story as it's still kinda technology related (television, tv shows) but interesting nonetheless and worth writing about.
For some follow up reading, check out the article on Yahoo news here.
Thanks guys, until next time.
***EDIT*** As of Febuary 4th, Britney Spears will not be appearing on Will & Grace due to cancellation & network concern.
