02.01.06 (1:37 pm) [edit]
Hi guys, I haven't posted for a couple of days as I've been really busy with work and stuff. I am working something for tomorrow's post so I hope you guys come back to see that one. Last year I wrote a few papers on all kinds of things from Open Source Databases to understanding, installing and configuring Linux. I'm just cleaning up those papers now and I'll have them made avaliable on tomorrow's post if anybody was interested.
My laptop is in for repairs atm unfortunately (Still under warranty so I took it into Acer) and I have been using that to post on my blog when I'm away from home so that's probably why you haven't heard from me in a few days. I hope to get it back sometime next week.
In the meantime, I thought id just check in and let you guys know Im still around and still working on things and still very interested to hear people's technology related problems for Monday TechQuestions (Keep them coming).
Thanks guys, until next time....
Oh by the way, Any Will & Grace fans out there might be interested to know that Britney Spears will be making a guest appearance on the show on the April 13 episode (US) playing the role of a christian conservative sidekick to Sean Hayes' character Jack.

Monday TechQuestions #12
01.30.06 (3:32 pm) [edit]
Q: I'm wanting to purchase a new PC in the next few months. I have heard good things about Apple's new iMac's but I have been using Windows all my life. Should I buy a mac or stick with PC's? What's your opinion?
A: I myself am very excited about what Apple are doing with their new iMac's and their new Mac Book Pro laptop computer. These days, Mac's are at a pretty good price these days which makes them more competitive with the PC, but then come to think of it I am also quite excited to see Windows Vista when it ships late this year.
I have been using Microsoft Windows all my life also just like you and I am thinking about sticking with the PC personally as I can build a new PC much cheaper than I can buy a Mac for.
That said, I believe it will all come down to personal preference. Since you are a windows user and you are used to the Windows interface, it might be an idea to just stick with Windows since all your applications would most definately be windows based anyway.
If you are feeling a little adventurous, buying a Mac and learning MacOSX probably won't take you as long as if you were learning windows from scratch as Apple do a great job simplifying many difficult tasks and they have a very simple and clean OS so learning is easy. It's all up to you, but in my opinion since you've been using windows for quite a while, I would suggest you just stick with that as it will be cheaper for you initially (You won't have to rebuy Mac versions of all your software).
I hope that was helpful, be sure to check back as I cover alot of information here on my blog regarding what both Apple and Microsoft are doing with both their products. Thanks for your question.

Q&A - Character Questions
01.29.06 (9:44 am) [edit]
|
Hey guys, I know this post isn't really technology related but I thought I'd have some fun with a post originally written by CherryBlossmGrl , be sure to check out her blog its one of my favorites, really good. General Questions
What is your name, and what does it mean? Justin - usage: English/French, Origin: Hebrew Meaning: just, true
Are you male or female? Male
In what region do you live? Melbourne, Australia
Are you married, have a girlfriend/boyfriend, have children, etc? Single
How old are you? 20
What do you do? 3rd yr Computer Science Major - Programmer
What do you enjoy, or what are your hobbies? (Be specific. If you like music, what type of music do you like, for example.) I like listening to Rock, metal, Alternative, some stuff from the 80's. Favourite band/s: Nightwish, Dream Theater. I love playing games (Fav: Metal Gear Solid series, God of War & the Gran Turismo Series - PS2). I have an interest in photography, Computing, Science & Technology and love watching movies (StarWars 1/2/3/4/5/6 all my fav's) and I love intelligent movies - drama's, comedy's whatever, as long as it gets you thinking. I also love hanging out with friends.
What do you hate? I hate shallow, bitter and stuck-up people. I hate listening to crap music, people complaining & I hate when you're doing long division and have a remainder left over (Thank you Milhouse).
------------------------ Character Questions:
You see someone getting mugged in the street. You don’t know if the perpetrator is armed, and you have your cell phone with you. What do you do? I would call the police, help the person who got mugged if they were thrown to the ground after the perpetrator left, then try track where the perp was going.
Your car broke down in your driveway, and you don’t have the slightest idea how to fix it. What would you do? I would call a mechanic to come help. Maybe David Putty knows!
You’re married with children, and you just got a job offer that gives you a large raise–but you have to move across the country. Everybody is okay with it, except your oldest child who has two years left of school and doesn’t want to move. What do you do? If the pay rise was worth it, I would move bringing up the option that my oldest could stay and finish school and stay with family, then move back with us when he/she finishes if that's what they wanted. If the pay wasn't worth it, I would sacrifice extra $$$ for the happiness of my family.
Your best friend gets in a fight and kills someone. You weren’t there, but your friend is running from the police and says he/she was defending him/herself. Your friend comes to you for help. What do you do? I would try and defend them as best I could, possibly hiring a good defence lawyer to help. If my friend was truely innocent, I believe we could work through it and prove it.
You’re in college and you’re failing a class. You can still withdraw without getting a failing grade, but you won’t get your money back. What do you do? I would try my best to get those grades up, possibly some extra curricular stuff, but I would withdraw if I was definately going to fail. Who cares about the money when you'll loose the money anyway along with a fail also. Then again........How could I be failing? lol
You’re walking with someone you love and hold dear when another person walks near and starts making lewd or insulting remarks toward your loved one. You don’t recognize this person. What do you do? We would just keep walking by and if they continued, I'd walk up to this person and say "What the hell is your problem?" try to diffuse the situation without resorting to violence, but then again if this guy was just pissing me off, i'd probably take a swing at him.
You and the one you love get into an argument. He/she says that you are hurting their feelings, but you don't think that their having hurt feelings over this makes sense. How do you react? If my loved one was making a big deal out of nothing, I would sit down with them and talk through things. Otherwise, i'd probably do the same thing. I would change what i was doing to make them feel hurt if I could. Then again, im a nice guy, how could I hurt my loved one's feelings. If you wanna see CherryBlossmGrl's responses to these questions, be sure to check out her post here.
Thanks guys, and be sure to check back tomorrow for Monday TechQuestions #12.

Russian moonbase by 2015
01.28.06 (11:09 am) [edit]
|
Russian Energy officials were quoted saying at an academic conference that Russia is planning to build a full scale moonbase mine by 2015 to mine and deliver the rare Helium-3 isotope to Earth for use in Nuclear Fusion.
Current isotopes used in Nuclear fission/fusion include Uranium which has significant amounts of radioactive by-product namely plutonium 239. It is this man-made by product of current nuclear technology that is so dangerous and becoming very difficult to store and maintain. It is this radioactive metal that is used in the manufacture of nuclear weapons.
If Russian agencies do establish a mine on the moon and begin extraction of Helium-3 for transportation back to earth, this would mean that the rare H3 isotope can be used in nuclear reactors with no (or minimal) radioactive by product.
"Rare on earth but plentiful on the moon, it is seen by some experts as an ideal fuel because it is powerful, non-polluting and generates almost no radioactive by-product" - news.com.au: Russia to open moonbase mine.
This could be a very big deal for the planet's energy sources for probably the next thousand years but just reading through this article, one must think that establishing a mine on the moon could become highly controversial and would probably require approval from other countries representatives and possibly the UN or similar organisation.

Suikoden V headed to the US
01.26.06 (9:49 pm) [edit]
Just yesterday, Konami confirmed that Suikoden V (which has a Feb 23rd JAP release) will be translated into English, ready for a late March US release. I know a certain somebody who will be very pleased about that.
For those of you who don't know, Suikoden is quite the popular game series in Japan but for us over in the west who (unfortunately for us) don't know Japanese, have to wait quite a long time for an english release taking anywhere between a month or an entire year. Anime' over in the western world has grown in popularity over the last few years and more and more anime' themed game titles (mainly on the PS2) are entering US, European and Australian markets with great delight.
Suikoden V is the 5th entry in an illustrious series which takes the land of Falena through some serious SH*T! One note that fans of the series will im sure be pleasently suprised about is that Suikoden V has gone back to its original 6 person team structure during battle sequences which has proved a winner in the past now with more of a real-time strategy feel.
I won't keep raving about this game, but Suikoden V for any anime' fan will be one hell of a great game and with a late March English release, stunning new visuals, great story and awsome musical soundtrack one can't possibly pass up. Be sure to check out the full preview at ign and check out some of the in game footage and screenshots.

Internet with a touch of a pen
01.25.06 (12:38 pm) [edit]
I absolutely love this new product by Nokia called the 770 Internet Tablet . Instead of carrying around bulky laptop computers or PDA's that just don't cut it when it comes to power and functionality, you can now carry a new Nokia Internet Tablet which allows you to browse the web, check email, listen to music, watch full motion video and flick through your photos amongst many other things.
The Internet Tablet makes use of 802.11b/g wireless networks allowing you to be online at anytime, whether your at home or out in the city or relaxing in a park...so long as you have access to a wireless hotspot with internet access you can stay connected wherever you are.
The battery time could use some work with operation between 3 hrs (while browsing) and 7hrs (stand by) but is fairly decent for just catching up on news, weather, email or whatever quickly and easily. It retails for around USD$300 which equates to around AUD$450 or so which is a pretty decent price for such a great device. The Tablet's operating system is upgradeable (currently running Linux based Internet Tablet 2005) but there is word of a new OS IT (Internet Tablet) 2006 which will include VOIP and instant messaging to the vast array of features.
Be sure to check this one out. I am so exited about this product as it could mean leaving my laptop behind at home when I go out and the device is small enough to carry with you so we get the best of both worlds.

Monday TechQuestions #11
01.23.06 (7:52 pm) [edit]
|
Back with another question, this time a Linux based question. I don't think I've ever had a Linux related question but here it is.
Q: I'll shoot you a question. I've been using linux for a little while now, because I had to do a clean windows install, and when I did, I can no longer use the cdkey I used before(which is stupid.. I'm not buying ANOTHER copy of windows...)
So .. anyway .. I, like most fairly inexperienced linux users, am having trouble with sound. As of now, I can play one sound at a time, but can't figure out how to have more. Say I'm listening to music, I no longer hear the sound notifying me of new messages or whatever. How might I go about fixing this?
- userfriendly
A: Thanks userfriendly for your question. I'll give u a quick idea of what the problem could be as it could be more complex. You say you can only play one sound at a time which sounds like a sound provider issue. Linux uses 3 major sound providers namely GStreamer, Xine and ALSA. Your system will be configured to use one of these three providers for audio in/out. I think ALSA has this issue with only 1 audio output channel while Xine and GStreamer can process many origins of sound. I myself used to use Linux all the time and only just got back into using it late last year but im sure your problem is related to this.
If there are any Linux guru's out there who want to add to this, please feel free and comment the post.

Are you a worthy Mensa candidate?
01.22.06 (6:13 pm) [edit]
Ever wanted to belong to the illustrious organisation that recognises high academic achievement and intelligence known as MENSA? There are some pretty tough tests released by mensa to see if you have what it takes to be the next Einstein.
If you consider yourself to be 'highly intelligent' or would rather learn the intricacies of physics instead of going out with friends, then try your luck with this 30 minute mensa intelligence workout . As the test outlines you will have 30 minutes to complete 30 grueling questions covering academics, problem solving, numeracy, logic and word jumbles.
When you complete the test, you can submit it to MENSA for them to assess your results. Who knows, if you ace this test they may very well send you an Official MENSA intelligence test and possibly become a member of this prestigeous organisation.
What are you waiting for.......the force is strong in you....go!

If you happen to have an EG&G Model 531 Microflash and a Nikon D100 digital camera you photography could be faster than a speeding bullet, literally.
Here are some really cool images taken at the Edgerton Center of a bullet smoothly gliding through cards, cardboard, paper, pens, pencils, ID cards, credit cards...you name it and all captured with a super high speed lense. You really need to check this one out.
Nothing much to say about this one, but really cool.

Hate Microsoft Word? Alternates are the answer!
01.20.06 (7:18 pm) [edit]
|
Microsoft word has fast become one of the most widely used word processing applications over both Windows and Mac. I remember when not only MS Word was avaliable, but also great word processors such as Word Perfect and Lotus Word Pro. so what's happened to the rest? I went to find out.
Other great word processors are still around but get overshadowed by the grunt of Microsoft Word and the whole Microsoft Office suite. Don't get me wrong the MS Office suite is a great set of applications and I use word and Excel all the time, but wouldn't it be great to have the same functionality of Microsoft Word in an application that's say.....free?
OpenOffice - Great set of features - Compatible with MS Office file formats - Free
Well friends, we can. I'm going to start off with a great open source office suite called OpenOffice. Linux users have been aware of OpenOffice for quite sometime as its the default productivity package installed with practically every linux distribution, but now the folks at OpenOffice have finally written the application for Windows. OpenOffice not only includes a premier word processor (Write) it also contains practically everything you need to make the complete switch from MS Office to OpenOffice. These features include a spreasheet, presentation app (powerpoint), project management application etc. For a free download, you can't go past OpenOffice. Even though it is free, that doesn't mean that its Word's sub par equivalent, no sir. OpenOffice has the same functionality as word and even more so, and for free you can't go wrong.
Corel Word Perfect - Very powerful application - Fairly easy to use - Not free, USD$159.99 for WP Office X3
Word perfect has been around for quite sometime and in the mid 90's (i think) Word Perfect was bought by Corel who are most well known for their imaging and graphics applications namely Corel Draw. Word Perfect is a great MS Word alternative but unfortunately is not free and at a hefty USD$159.99 for the Word Perfect Office Suite its probably not much cheaper than Microsoft's product. A substantial application nonetheless.
AbiWord - Free Application - Cross Platform over Windows, Mac and Linux - Useful features
AbiWord is an open source project licenced under the GPL which means free, free, free. The team working on this word processor have done a remarkable job at implementing some of the features into their program that made Word such a popular tool. The interface is fairly streamlined and easy to find what your looking for (very OpenOffice'ish) and would be a great MS Word replacement for no cost at all.
LyX - Free Open Source Application - Nice features - Different
LyX is another open source free word processor avaliable for the Windows and Mac platforms and is interestingly different from other word processors out there. Sure, LyX still looks like any other word processor but the focus behind Lyx is behind the structure of your document and not the appearance itself. A quote taken straight from the LyX website sums up the application great: "LyX is for people that write and want their writing to look great, right out of the box. No more endless tinkering with formatting details, 'finger painting' font attributes or futzing around with page boundaries. You just write. In the background, Prof. Knuth's legendary TeX typesetting engine makes you look good".
Updates are readily avaliable and are released at regular intervals and support is also great. The customizable interface is also a bonus aswell.
There are heaps of other alternatives to Word out there but there are just so many to list so I'll post links to a few others below and let you make up your own mind about them.
OpenOffice AbiWord ThinkFree Writely - Online word processor Lyx - Free opensource word processor - Windows / Mac Atlantis Kword - Linux Appleworks - Commercial Software MacOSX TextShield
Anybody stuck using Microsoft Word and wants a change should definately check out some of these free open source alternatives to using Microsoft Word. Microsoft WNextord is a great program, but if you want a change, there's always an answer.

Paint.NET 2.5
01.19.06 (9:15 pm) [edit]
Have you ever looked around for a great replacement app for MS Paint but couldn't really find one? Well Paint.NET 2.5 is your answer.
Paint.NET originally started as an undergraduate development project at Washington State University and since then, the original students working on the project have graduated, but still work on the application, making it better than ever.
The program is more reminiscent of professional image editing software such as Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop instead of an MS Paint replacement, but this app is really awsome. Features such as photo touch up and a great selection of image effects puts it right up there with photoshop, but the best part is it is totally free. Thats right!
You do need to have the .NET Framework v2.0 installed to run this app, but thats not an issue these days. If you don't currently have .NET 2.0 installed, just run windows update or download it off the microsoft website.
One feature of this application I do like is that all the toolbars can become transparent when they overlap your image which is really great as screen real estate becomes a problem in these apps.
Be sure to check this one out, well worth the massive 3.39MB download. lol.

Gamer commits suicide on GameFAQ's MGS forum
01.19.06 (11:41 am) [edit]
I could not believe this when I read about it this morning. An American gamer who frequented the Metal Gear Solid forums on GameFAQ's ended his life the other day after telling his friends on the forum that troubles in his life were unbareable and not worth living through. This article published on Yahoo! News explains in greater detail how he switched on his webcam showing the forum's members pouring engine anti-freeze down his throat then the apparent side affects of the liquid through his body.
This lasted (according to Yahoo news) a few hours as the anti-freeze did its work. Nobody from the forum had heard from 'Kudjo' (his forum nickname) and people were starting to get worried.
"After he failed to appear at regular meeting spots, gamers went to his home and learnt he died in hospital on January 7" - Yahoo News.
What's really chilling is his final words which can be found here on the now closed Metal Gear Solid forum. He goes into saying how his friends on the forum were as best friends were, comparable to his real life friends and that he was going to end it. There was some initial confusion as to wheather he was going to be leaving the forum as a member, or ending his life. Unfortunately the latter rang true and people started to get worried.
You can check out the Yahoo news article and his final words then let us know what you think.

Every now and then I get questions from my friends asking me "Whats a good site to look at?" or "What are you doing now?". Its always fun to look through friends bookmark lists and see what they are interested in (with their permission of course). So, I thought i'd share a few of mine here for you today.
Because there are quite a few, I didn't want to flood my blog with a huge post so you can find them via this link below:

The myriad of 'Web 2.0' web technologies
01.17.06 (3:28 pm) [edit]
These days there are so many different technologies that go into the development of websites and often it is these technologies that really mean the difference between an average site, and a site above the rest.
There are all kinds of web based technologies with their different purposes and fields of power. I thought I'd take a look at some of the different 'web 2.0' (although I don't much like calling it that) technologies that exist today and I myself have used, how they have benifited me in my time and give just a brief run down on what they do.
PHP - PHP Hypertext Processor: Learning PHP for me was probably one of the best experiences I've had in my relatively short programming experience of 4-5 years or so (of which the last 3 have been related to my BA. Computer Science). PHP is a web based scripting language reminiscent of JAVA and C/C++ in its syntax structure, ease of use and power to perform. PHP really comes into its own when handing the flow of data between database server technologies such as MySQL. It has never been easier to create a database driven website and this I think is why PHP has become so popular as a programming lanauge(well scripting language anyway).
AJAX - Asynchronous JavaScript And XML: I personally have only just began delving into the world of AJAX but this web technology is fast becoming a widely used method of creating dynamic webpages never before made possible. I guess I should mention that AJAX isn't really a technology on its own, but rather a collection of technologies (namely Javascript and XML) working together to accomplish powerful web based tasks. A quick quote taken from Wikipedia sum's up the power of AJAX really well, "Ajax applications are largely executed on the user's computer; they can perform a number of tasks without their performance being limited by the need to fetch a full page of HTML each time a change is made. This permits the development of interactive applications, in particular rich graphic user interfaces using a full range of DHTML techniques."
Ruby on Rails - http://www.rubyonrails.org/ Ruby on Rails is an exiting new web development framework in which programmers can write code for a website and not have to worry about carrying out time consuming configuration tasks as the Ruby framework takes care of all that, allowing the programmer to be a creative as possible. "Ruby on Rails is an open-source web framework that's optimized for programmer happiness and sustainable productivity" - Ruby on Rails official site. The idea behind ROR is similar to PHP but with a focus on making programmer's lives easier with integrating database technologies into a website a snap. I myself am yet to write anything in ROR but I might give it a whirl sometime soon. If you have never heard of Ruby on Rails and aren't sure what you can accomplish with it, just take a look at some of the web applications developed under ROR on their website, you'll be amazed.
That's it for me for another day, take it easy guys.

Monday TechQuestion's #10 - Reaches 10
01.16.06 (1:04 pm) [edit]
|
Well here we are with another post of Monday TechQuestions. Have finally reached 10 TechQuestion's posts but unfortunately this may be the end of an era for my beloved Monday TechQuestions posts due to lack of public enthusiasm for the idea.
Don't get me wrong, I have recieved some great feedback and praise on the idea I started now 10 weeks ago but Monday TechQuestion's (MTQ) is dependant on public feedback which unfortunately has faded in the last few weeks. I am very greatful for the responses I have had and some of the questions I have received over these 10 weeks have been truely awsome.
What I will do is I won't kill MTQ for good as yet, i'm thinking of keeping it going for this week and see what kind of a response it gets and what questions I recieve, but if public opinion or lack of interest becomes more apparent, Monady Tech Question's will be no more.
If I do decide to take out MTQ for good, I am thinking about replacing it with something similar such as a weekly post just talking about how to do something or cover some topics that would have otherwise been covered in Monday TechQuestions.
Thanks guys, I do appreciated the support I recieve for Monday TechQuestion's and support for my blog in general. My blog's visitor stats have never been stronger and I encourage you to keep coming back as there is always something new and interesting to read here.
Until next time...

Linux LiveCD List
01.15.06 (11:10 am) [edit]
I don't really talk about Linux much on my blog but it is a fact that Linux is becoming one of the fastest growing desktop operating systems becoming more and more popular with each month.
If somebody was interested in getting into Linux and had never used Linux before, it can often be confusing as to where to start and which Linux flavour (or distribution as its called) to start with thats 'newbie' friendly and easy to learn. Linux LiveCD's have help many of us pick out a linux distro that we might not be so sure about and lets us try it out without commiting our PC's to a full installation until we know exactly what we are getting ourselves into.
I came across this really great site FrozenTech's LiveCD List which lists all the current Linux LiveCD's currently floating around on the net and categorizes them by their sole purpose which makes picking out a distribution that much easier.
After 'test-driving' a linux distro via a LiveCD and if you like it, you can always go and download the full 'installable' distribution to install on your hard drive to not only get the added bonus of greater performance (not running off a cd anymore) but having the ability to install and configure your software which can't really be done when booted off a CD.
I know a few people who would be interested in getting started with Linux, but just don't know where to start, "It all just seems to hard, I don't think its worth it. Windows works for me.". That's fair enough but you'll never know how hard it is if you don't try Linux out. In the last year or two, Linux has become so much easier to set up and use with their GUI installers and no unnecessary cryptic command line interfaces.
If your interested in Linux, I hope you check out this list and I hope it helps you get started with this truely great operating system.

File-Swap.com: Give a little, get a little
01.14.06 (9:57 am) [edit]
Here's a site you don't see everyday. File-Swap.com is a file sharing site that's different from your average file upload site or P2P client. How this differs is you upload a file of any kind, whether it be a music file, image, word document whatever, and File-Swap.com sends you a completely random file in return.
As they say "give one file, get one free!" this couldn't be more true, but in this sense, the site doesn't really offer any productive use other than killing time and seeing what you get in return for your file. The site is a novelty, but a fun new take on file sharing of a different kind.
I have made mention about other online file sharing sites before here on my blog. One that springs to mind is putfile.com from my December 2005 post 'Putfile.com hangs Singaporian users'. This site has more productive value in the sense that you can upload and store your uploaded files for later use, instead of just uploading your file and recieving a random one in return.
I guess its different and you gotta give file-swap.com some credit for that, but it doesn't really offer anything useful other than a time waster. It is however an interesting site and you may as well go check it out.

Western VS Japanese game artwork
01.13.06 (10:59 am) [edit]
This I thought was really interesting. We all know that game box art changes between US/EU/AUS and Japanese variants of the same game, but just how much, and how much of it is culturally related VS just good ideas for packaging. Well, I thought I'd go find out.
Gamespy have a site under Hardcore Gaming 101 called Japanese Artwork of Western Games and it outlines just some of the games developed outside of Japan and how they differ in packaging looks from their western versions. Personally I do like the Western variants of box art as some artwork on japanese versions is a little bland, but some I must say are slightly better (Metroid Prime 2 Echos GC is pretty close I think).
Most of the time, there is subtle difference but japanese versions of box art seems to take the same concept of the western box but just photoshop a collage of pics from the game and use that as the box.
Ahh who knows, who really cares cos at the end of the day, a game is a game regardless of the box art, but a piece of useless information for you guys in case anybody was interested. lol.
Thanks guys.

Most amazing wallpapers you'll ever see
01.12.06 (10:23 am) [edit]
I came across a really excellent website that has some of the most beautiful and amazing wallpapers anywhere on the net. Lost Coders have heaps and heaps of wallpapers for free download and you'll be hard pressed to find an 'average' one on this site.
I only found this site a day or two ago and I myself have probably downloaded like 40 wallpapers from here they are so cool. In the past I have been looking around for my wallpapers from various sites such as DeviantArt, WinCustomize and ThemeXP.org to a lesser extent.
I'm one of those guys who frequently needs change on their windows desktop otherwise things just get too boring so I'm glad I found a new site with wallpapers I haven't really seen before.
Another site I did mention in a previous post called StudioTwentyEight also has a great collection of wallpapers from one particular artist, as well as his windows visual styles and icon packages. Stuff here at StudioTwentyEight is really really cool, especially his visual styles for anybody into Windows Desktop Themes or shell skinning.
Just a quick one for today, thought I'd get this new site out there a bit, remember to check out the awsome wallpapers at Lost Coders and I'll catch you guys next time.

Looks like Intel based Mac's are finally here
01.11.06 (5:50 am) [edit]
Alot of questions were answered yesterday at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco as Steve Jobs delievered his keynote address to many eager mac fans. The keynote covered much of the usual, iTunes Music Store sales, success of the iPod and iPod Nano, new version of iLife (iLife 06) but people were desperate to find out what exactly will be happening with intel based mac's. That question was finally answered.
Apple has released 2 computers that will initially be Intel based, with other PC's in the mac line soon to follow. For now, on the portability side we'll have the macbook pro and desktop computing will now be Intel based iMac's. You know what...with the new CPU's Apple believes their macbook pro is up to 4X faster than their current laptop computers, and the new iMac is up to 2X faster than the current G5 iMac and yes, it is the same price, which is awsome.
A new CPU developed by Intel named the Intel Core Duo is a dual core 32-bit CPU with an impressive 2MB L2 cache. It is expected to be quite the performer in these new mac's and I really can't wait to get one.
Anybody who has been looking out for an opportunity to switch from Windows to Mac won't get any better time than right now.

Q: I'm new to programming but don't really know where to start. Which languages are good to learn when starting out and is there a good language thats both easy to learn and useful (used alot in industry)? Adam, Huntfield Heights, South Australia
A: Thanks Adam for your question, don't think I've had a programming related question so far. Learning a new programming language is alot like learning a spoken language, its all just a matter of understanding the basics and working from there. You can't learn a new language over night, it can take a few months to learn, even a few years to truely become fluent in a given language.
For beginners, there are a few languages I'd personally recommend for their simplicity and relatively easy to understand syntax.
- JAVA - Visual Basic / Visual Basic.NET
I believe these two languages are a great starting point for programming beginners as they are both widely used languages, but still easier to learn than some more visually complicated languages such as C/C++.
There are heaps and heaps of places you can start learning programming from, resources are everywhere: Internet, books, friends, etc. One really great place to check out is a site set up by a man called Sean Greasley who is a Software Engineering graduate from the Sheffield Hallam University in England. He knows his stuff and makes some really great video tutorials on various programming languages.
If you are serious about learning computer programming, I can't recommend strongly enough that enrolling in a course at University will definately help you further your programming skills quite dramatically (I know from experience - 3rd yr Computer Science Major myself).
I hope that helped Adam and good luck on your new found love of programming.

Suspicions Confirmed! Playstation 3 Controller to be re-designed
01.08.06 (9:54 am) [edit]
|
For months have I been telling friends how Sony will completely die (in my opinion) if they keep their existing 'boomerang' design of a controller for the PS3. Now, my suspicions of Sony thinking about changing the design haven't been more true.
According to an article at punchjump.com, The concept PS3 controller was absent from the PS3 booth at CES 2006 were the console was proudly displayed in a glass case. The current PS3 controller design has recieved critical reviews from people in the know in the industry and I myself wasn't a fan of the design. It would be so unconfortable to hold and just wouldn't work as a gaming controller.
This absence of the controller points to the idea that Sony are redeveloping their controller to be more user friendly and easier to use. Without a doubt, Sony's DualShock2 controller (currently used on the PS2) has remained one of the BEST designed controllers of any time period in gaming history as cited by many industry leaders.
In the next 2-3 months, I'll be expecting Sony to hold a press conference outlining their plans and reporting on the status of the revampt PS3 controller. Whether they do this is entirely another matter, but I hope they do for all the legions of Playstation fans sake (including me).

Windows Live Messenger Beta
01.07.06 (9:06 am) [edit]
Hey guys. The other day I recieved an email from Microsoft allowing my to try out their new beta version of the new MSN Messenger now apart of the Windows Live service which is now called Windows Live Messenger.
Here's the email I recieved from Microsoft: Hello!
We'd like you to be among the first to try a new beta version of Messenger.
If you use MSN® Messenger now, we think you're really going to enjoy Windows LiveTM Messenger. It's as fun and reliable as the Messenger you already know, and you won't lose your contact list or any other personal information when you try this new version.
Some of the new stuff it will let you do:
- Get it just the way you want it-choose your colours and more. The new Windows Live Messenger is more customisable than ever.
- Change your status to appear offline and still instant message with your contacts-a great way to hide from your coworker and still chat with your friends!
That last point being able to set your status to offline and still be able to chat is a really great addition to the program. There have been times when somebody comes online and you don't really want to talk to them, but still wanna chat with other friends, you really needed a way to hide yourself from them, and now you can which is really cool.
Customizing the Messenger interface is easier than ever now. Its cool how you can change interface colors and they get reflected (kind of like a theme) across the entire application.
Search is heavily integrated into the new version allowing you to quickly search through large contact lists to search for a particular contact, regardless of their email address, screen name, or real name. You can just type in their name, phone number, email address, screen name and find them quickly.

Grouping your contacts is another feature (although it has been in MSN probably since v2) it's more emphasised now and does have a practical feel which is good.
One thing that I do have a gripe about with the beta version is the tab along the side of the window. This tab which takes you to different MSN services has been in MSN Messenger since MSN 5 i think (maybe even earlier) but they really need to hide it away a little better than they have. This is still in beta so hopefully they do change that for the final product.
Windows Live Messenger looks like a promising product in my opinion and the final product will be incorporated into Windows Vista quite well so looking forward to seeing how things go.

Microsoft update the Windows Vista website, and looks heaps better
01.06.06 (11:01 am) [edit]
|
Well yet another Microsoft related post, but I just can't help it. Normally I don't really have anything to say about Microsoft. Heaps of people are more than frustrated with Windows XP among other annoyances, but I think 2006 definately could be a turning point for Microsoft.
I am very interested (and almost excited) about the upcoming release of Windows Vista (well Q3 anyway) as it addresses some of the really annoying things about Windows XP very well, mainly security flaws and GUI tweaks.
Microsoft have recently updated their Windows Vista website aswell and I must say it's looking so much better than their previous site. The site relflects the simplicity and ease of use that Windows Vista im sure (hopefully) will be renouned for.
From the many features it will boast, I am particularly impressed and interested in something they call 'Flip 3D' which takes over the functionality of the ALT+TAB command to switch between open windows.
Microsoft's implementation of Flip 3D (not sure if they will stick with the name though)
Interesting things they are doing up at Redmond these days, and I don't give praise to Microsoft often, those who know me will really understand my standpoint on Microsoft. I really am interested to see Vista as a finished product sometime this year.

Google Gone Braille
01.05.06 (9:34 am) [edit]
|
I among millions of computer users use Google as my search engine of choice. They are usually changing up their logo reflecting holidays or periods of the year, and yesterday they were celebrating the birthday of Braille. Thought it looked cool.

Good old Google, this looks really cool I think. This was their logo yesterday (Jan 5th, 2006).

Follow up from MediaMonkey post
01.04.06 (11:17 am) [edit]
Hey guys. Last post I talked about this really cool digial music organisational program called MediaMonkey. I have been using this program quite often recently and can't get enough of it.
Over a week of using it I have noticed one important thing. If you use MediaMonkey to delete old songs, of course they will be removed from your computer as well as your MediaMonkey playlist, but not your iTunes playlist for obvious reasons (different programs, thought I'd point it out in case it wasn't that obvious).
I use iTunes for my day-to-day music playing and not MediaMonkey. I have been using MediaMonkey mainly for auto-updating of metadata for my songs such as album art or whatever. Occasionally I'll come across songs I don't listen to anymore so I'll delete them straight from MediaMonkey so I needed to find a way to update my iTunes library to reflect this change.
So, I came across a small app found here simply called& nbsp;iTunes Library Updater. What this simple (yet effective) program does is looks in your music folder and compares files in this folder with your iTunes music library. If there is a song in your Library but not in your folder, it simply removes it from the playlist. This also works with adding files not yet in the Library also.
This app is small, yet saved me countless hours having to manually flick through my Library looking for obsolete files. Anybody else with this issue should really check out this program.

MediaMonkey truely an awsome application
01.03.06 (5:18 pm) [edit]
|
For anybody who has a large digital music playlist will really appreciate MediaMonkey. MediaMonkey is a music organisational program with close iTunes integration which is perfect for any iPod owner or even if you just like using iTunes to play your music.
What I REALLY REALLY love about this program is that you can automatically update your ID3 tags on your songs to update metadata such as artist, title, album and even grab the album art for that particular song off amazon. This really comes in handy if you have just ripped a music CD of yours to your computer but you don't have the proper track names or album art attached to the song.
Excerpt taken from mediamonkey.com: Organize music and edit tags in your audio library with a powerful, intuitive interface Automatically lookup and tag Album Art and other metadata Manage 50,000+ files in your music collection without bogging down Play MP3s and other audio formats, and never again worry about varying volume Record CDs into OGG, MP3, FLAC and WMA files Convert MP3s, OGG, FLAC and WMA files into other formats with the Audio Converter Create playlists and music mixes quickly and easily to suit any occasion Synchronize with iPods / MP3 players effortlessly and convert tracks on-the-fly
This program is so cool, any digital music lover should really check this one out. I'll stop blabbering about it and read up on its many features at mediamonkey.com.

Monday TechQuestions #8
01.02.06 (10:38 am) [edit]
Mmm, a little quite for this week's TechQuestion, probably becuase of the holiday and stuff so I thought I'd share my thoughts on Microsoft's upcoming Operating System - Windows Vista and some possible questions people may be asking when it releases late this year.
Windows Vista I think will really be Microsoft's time to shine if they can get it right. So far with Vista beta 1 and the upcoming beta 2, things look pretty promising as far as GUI aesthetics and security are concerned. What I'm really loving is the new ALT+TAB style window switching they have incorporated into Vista which gives you a three-dimensional look at all your open windows in a neat and clear presentation. I haven't said this for a while about a Microsoft Operating System, but I am really looking forward to what Microsoft do with Vista and beta 2 and what will make the grade into the retail version which is expected to ship Q3-Q4 2006 so I've heard.
One area that seems kinda ambiguous at the moment is hardware requirements. Friends have been asking me "Am I going to need a real beast of a computer to run Vista?" or "Will my current PC be able to run it at all?". I did a little looking around to find an answer to these questions so I thought where better to look than Microsoft's own website. As usual, things weren't exactly answered there either. Here is what Microsoft has outlined as far as hardware requirements are concerned:
CPU — PC systems should have a modern CPU. RAM — PC systems should have 512MB of memory or more.
| GPU — PC systems should have a graphics processor that will support Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM).
This doesn't really answer much for me, but at least gives me an indication on what to expect. I do believe that when Vista is almost ready to ship they will give us some figures that are a little more concrete.
Another thing that is really interesting me at the moment is the new Aero interface. The most notable aspect of the new interface is the 'glass look' of the windows. This is purely aesthetic and doesn't really add any true functionality but does look cool. Search is also integrated into practically everything in the OS also. Any window you may have open will probably have search functionality and with the addition of virtual folders, this is probably a good thing as for veteran windows users, this idea may take a while to get used to.
I have heard also (although not exactly sure, probably a rumor) that when Windows Vista ships, it will ship at a pricepoint substantially less that what XP shipped at. I heard Microsoft were doing this in an effort to stay competitive and also to try an minimize piracy of Vista. I guess they are thinking that if its cheap enough, it will hardly be worth pirating becuase of it's price.
Some really interesting things coming out of Redmond these days and its always an exciting time (good or bad) when a new Operating System comes out of that company. We will just have to wait and see what reality is with Vista. Remember when it used to be called 'Longhorn'? Well all thought that was a good name then they removed that codename and called it Vista. We all thought "WHAT THE HELL IS VISTA?", now I guess Vista is just second nature to many of us.
Thanks guys, and remember to keep those TechQuestions coming. It was kinda quite on the question's front but I do understand it is the holiday time (I wasn't even home myself).
Thanks guys and keep them coming.
