Spruce up your Windows Desktop
01.01.06 (2:18 pm) [edit]
|
Hey guys, I'm starting to feel a little bit better now which is good. I'm still a little sick, but getting there slowly.
I came across a really awsome website StudioTwentyEight which has such an awsome collection of Windows desktop themes and visual styles to give your windows desktop a little new years spruce. Each theme listed has two download variants depending on if you are using StyleXP or WindowsBlinds as your theme manager. There are some really creative and different themes here which really makes this site stand out from the myriad of desktop theme sites around these days.
If you are new to windows desktop themes or aren't really sure how to get them working, try download a program (Windows 2K/XP only) called StyleXP (link above). This program is by far the easiest to use as it takes care of practically everything for you. All you need to do is just download whichever visual style or theme you like (usually in .zip format) then open up StyleXP, click Add New Style, then select your theme. You can organise your themes, apply them and delete them all from this one program.
Have fun guys, take it easy.

Hey guys, I've been posting kinda sporadically for the last few days or so as I have come down with a cold. Its so weird, its the middle of summer and I get a cold. I guess stranger things have happened.
Hopefully i'll be feeling better in the next few days but I've been feeling kinda crapy lately hence the unfortunately neglecting of my blog. Just a quick notice for today guys, I'm still around and I will get back to posting, just sick at the moment and feel like crap. I hope everybody has a great & safe new years, all the best.

US & Japan to share region 1 on the PS3
12.29.05 (12:32 pm) [edit]
For all those soon to be Playstation 3 fans, this news is huge. The other day news was reported that Japan will be in line to share Region 1 for all Blu-Ray media, which means that consumers in the US will now be able to import all the DVD's and PS3 games they want from Japan without having to mod their consoles to play other regional specific games.
I think this is what the gaming industry really needs right now and US gamers who are fond of Japanese titles will be able to import hassle free. Even if there is a game released in Japan but the US won't see it for a few months from that release, US customers instead of having to wait will be able to import that game and play it early which is another really cool thing.
This region changing idea is definately not the first time this has happened. A bold yet positive move on Nintendo's part allowed Nintendo DS games to be region free allowing gamers across the globe to play games from any part of the world. This region 1 news is at least a good step forward, and hopefully this will be used as a stepping stone for future plans for region free games. Having region free games will greatly open up the gaming industry and give gamers from any part of the planet the same opportunity to play a game that they would otherwise not have access to without modding their consoles to play.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is pretty good
12.27.05 (7:03 pm) [edit]
The other day I got Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (only on PS2) and I must say it truely is quite an awsome game. Fans of the Battlefield series will know what I'm talking about when I say how cool controlling a myriad of vehicles, units and so on. Some really cool new gameplay mechanics have made their way into BF2 Modern Combat such as this really awsome new 'hotswap' feature that will allow you to quickly swap your control over your different units, so one minute you'll be sniping off enemies with your sniper, next you'll be mowing down streets in a tank.
Heaps of really cool new weapons and gadgets make this incarnation of Battlefield different and the single player campaign will keep you busy for quite a long time. Once you do finish the campaign, there's still quite a bit you can do such as the many challenges that you unlock as you progress through the single player game amongst other things.
Anybody interested in Battlefield 2: Modern combat and own a PS2 should definately check this one out.

Monday TechQuestions #7
12.26.05 (7:34 pm) [edit]
|
Hey guys. I hope you all had yourselves a great christmas. I'm back from my trip and ready to post another session of Monday TechQuestion's for ya.
Q: Since this is the holiday time of the year, I thought I'd ask you a question about digital photography. I have a simple 4 Megapixel camera and was wondering what differences there were in image quality when I switch to say 3MP, 2MP and so on? -Anonymous
A: Ahh it is that time of the year and no better time to take photos. Thanks for such a great question. Differences between different value M (megapixels) impact firstly image size, and secondly because of that image size either growing or shrinking image quality also differs.
Here are the image sizes for each of the different megapixel values. I'll only include image sizes up to 4M as that is as high your camera goes (which by the way 4M is quite generous for day-to-day photography):
- 4M (F/N - F = better quality / N = default 4M) - 2272 x 1704
- 3M - 2048 x 1536
- 2M - 1600 x 1200
- 1M - 1280 x 960
- 0.3M (most cameras support this) - 640 x 480
Different settings of megapixels will change the recorded image size (or resolution). Becuase of this change, image quality will be better or worse depending on the setting. For eg. 4M yeilds a 2272 x 1704 image which means there are 2,272 pixels by 1,704 pixels that make up your image. More pixels means that more detail can be filled in becuase more pixels are avaliable to be used compared with a 0.3M image (640x480) which is obviously lesser quality.
That's pretty much the major different between different values of megapixels regarding size and quality. Thanks for your question, and again I hope everybody had a great Christmas.

Ever wanted to know how to fly an SR-71 Blackbird?
12.21.05 (1:45 pm) [edit]
|
Ever wanted to know how to fly an SR-71 Blackbird? Well, here's ur chance to all you budding airforce pilot's out there. sr-71.org has practically every diagram, schematic view of this plane, inside and out. You can take a look at very detailed diagrams of the cockpit instrumentation with labels outlining what the hell everything does, the layout of the plane, and how everything works.
Thats only just a small portion of some of the diagrams on show here and for any war plane buff, this site will prove to be quite interesting. This site even gives you access to the SR-71 Blackbird's flight manual, which i'm sure is a pretty lengthy document (haven't checked it out yet) and included are dozens more diagrams and shots of the plane. Even the fuel management systems are outlined in so much detail, not to mention this entire plane. lol if you had the $$$ you could probably even build your very own from these schematics their that detailed lol.
Just an interesting snippet I thought I'd throw your way for today. Enjoy!

Landed a new Job!
12.20.05 (8:49 am) [edit]
Well guys, I just landed myself a job at Victoria University (Melbourne, Australia). As many of you know, I am a Computer Science student in my 3rd year next year at the same University. I'm going to be doing some Database design and engineering work for them over the next few months which will be interesting.
I'm not really too fussed I'm only doing it for a few months, becuase I'm going to be pretty busy this year which schoolwork I can see it. I want to be doing alot more of that work though, just pick up all different jobs in the industry for a few months, just work on a project here and there and get some experience up. At least after next year, I would have completed my Computer Science degree so job opportunities will hopefully be easier to come by than now anyway.

Monday TechQuestions #6
12.19.05 (6:15 am) [edit]
Well here we are with another hand picked Tech Question. Out of all the questions I recieve, I usually try to pick out the one that I think is a good question, something that many people will benefit from and interesting also. Here's #6...
Q: Hey, I have a question. I am interested in watching TV on my PC and possibly record some shows if I miss them or whatever and burn them to DVD. Do I need a TV tuner card? Thanks.
Michael - Melbourne, Australia
A: Thanks Michael for your question. You are on the right track, but a TV Tuner card will only allow you to recieve a television signal straight into your PC, which means you will only be able to watch TV which partly solves your problem. If you are also wanting to use your computer to record TV also (just like a PVR or TiVo) you will need to instead get a TV capture card. A capture card will both 'tune' a TV signal, and allow you to 'capture' that signal also.
Most TV Capture cards these days will encode video on the card itself usually in MPEG-1 / MPEG-2 format ready to be burnt to DVD. As well as encoding in realtime, it will also decode at the same time, allowing you to be recording a show, and watching a show at the same time.
If you are looking for a TV Capture card and don't really want to spend heaps, I would suggest the WinFast PVR 2000. Its a great card for only AUD$140 and can capture in a variety of formats and does its video encoding on the card itself freeing up CPU resources. On a budget, this card would be my pick.
Hope that answered your question Michael. Remember you can catch TechQuestions every Monday and if you want to leave a question, just email me, leave your question via a comment on a post or tBlog users can just mail me.
Thanks again guys, seeya later.

Want to use your laptop LCD as a secondary monitor?
12.18.05 (3:28 pm) [edit]
I have been a big user of multiple displays in recent times and makes multitasking so much easier. Having the ability to move currently open windows or applications to another monitor and keep them open whilst your doing other things is such a time saver.
I have used a secondary monitor off my laptop before, and that's really no trouble. All you need to do is just plug in a VGA monitor cable from the 2nd monitor and plug it into the back of your laptop. Then you can extend your windows desktop from your laptop across to that second monitor. Too Easy!
But (and here it is) I have been wondering how easy it would be to instead of using a laptop as the primary PC and a desktop CRT or LCD as the secondary, could you use your laptop LCD as the secondary monitor instead?
Windows doesn't have any software that will allow you to do this, but a really awsome application called MaxiVista will allow you to do just that, but over an active network connection which is awsome. If you happen to have a wireless network (which I'm lucky enough to have, but regular ethernet connected network will be fine) you can extend your windows desktop from your main 'Workstation PC' over to your laptop LCD so you essentially have 2 monitors.
This definately comes in handy. MaxiVista is fairly easy to set-up and use in a matter of minutes, but if you are unsure on how to do this, the website has a great installation video tutorial which would help.
All in all, I was very happy to find MaxiVista as I can now finally use my laptop monitor as a secondary monitor when I'm at home and not using my laptop. My laptop is almost brand new, powerful and works fine, but this app would be great for somebody who has a laptop of a few years old and coming to the end of its life. You can just set this up and use the monitor on your laptop as a secondary display.
Really cool, thanks again guys for your support!

Status update and general chat
12.18.05 (11:01 am) [edit]
|
Ahh, sorry for the delay guys as I have been one busy bee these last few days. Myself and a friend (we're both computer science majors) have started working with two Software Engineering students from RMIT here in Melbourne working on a new project so haven't been home in a few days lol.
This video application I was writing is more or less finished. I decided to leave it where it was, there's still some functionality I could have added but to be honest, couldn't really be bothered. It does play ANYTHING which is cool, playing wmv, avi, mpeg, mpg, ra, ram, mov and even DVD's. The app was just a quick fix for personal use really so the user interface and controls probably aren't quite the best, and functionality such as time seeking we re not added. As I said, it was only a personal project of mine so didn't really bother me.
The other day I was looking around for some really good torrent sites (for any of you who are interested in bittorrent) becuase the one's I was using weren't really all that great. Sites such as isohunt and torrentbox have some torrents there, but most of them aren't really seeded anymore or don't work properly. But I did find one i'm sure many people are using called TorrentSpy. This site is my new favourite torrent site. They have heaps of brand new torrents and seeds aren't a problem and connection speeds on many of their torrents are really great. Just thought I'd quickly share that with you guys.
Check back tomorrow guys for Monday TechQuestion's #6 (Monday tomorrow here in Australia - GMT+10 :)). Thanks Guys.

I'm writing a new application
12.15.05 (6:06 pm) [edit]
Hey guys. The other day I found myself wondering why I had to have so many different multimedia applications installed on my PC to play all different kinds of video files. For example, if I wanted to play an AVI or WMV file, I would run it in Windows Media Player right, or if I wanted to play a Quicktime movie, I would play it in Quicktime. Real video in Real Player, the list goes on.
I thought wouldn't it be great if I could play all my video files in one application, regardless of file type! We'll I'm working on a solution. As many of you know, I am a computer Science student now in my last year, so I'm always thinking up applications that will make my life easier. Now I'm definately sure that this app will help me out alot.
I looked around on the net for a media player that would allow me to play all different kinds of media from the one app, but had no such luck finding anything even remotely appealing. I would have thought that somebody would have thought up the idea of being able to play ALL video file formats in one player long ago, but doesn't look that way. I'm now writing this app anyway and so far things are coming along pretty great. Ill let you guys know how its going in the next week or so and when it's finished, I can post it here on my blog in case anybody is interested in a player that can play anything.
Thanks guys! Seeya.

Firefox 1.5 stability exploit
12.14.05 (9:13 am) [edit]
|
Last week I read somewhere that the new version of Firefox (which is 1.5) has a bug which causes large amounts of instability. Malicious code on a website can be executed, resulting in large amounts of data filling up in relevent files Firefox uses to track your page history. Becuase of this surge in data being written to these files, when Firefox loads up the program crashes subsequently becuase of this memory overflow caused by the reloading of your history.
I read it, thought it was interesting but then didn't really think anything of it, until last night. I opened up Firefox (as usual) and started going about my usual online business when I came across a site about the exploit. It had a link which would redirect your browser to a webpage with this malicious code in question. I was interested to see exactly what this exploit actually does to the browser, so I clicked the link, and within 10 seconds of redirection, my browser totally froze up then crashed in a firery blaze of 0's and 1's. In the past, browser exploits haven't been much of a problem, usually just disabling certain parts of the browser, but this code exploiting this new bug found in Firefox 1.5 works just like a DOS (Denial of Service) attack, completely rendering your browser useless.
This was very interesting, and the reading I had done before hand was great and gave me a better understanding of how this actually happened. So I had an idea of how you could fix it. I remember reading that this code fills data files that track your history with crap, so I just went ahead and deleted a file called history.dat, and what do you know....good as new.
If you are a firefox user and have come across this same problem, be sure to check up on it here. Mozilla are working on a new patch I think which will fix this problem, but you can just manually delete this file anyway.

Conan & Leno now on iTunes
12.13.05 (9:27 am) [edit]
This is really cool for fans of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno or Late Night with Conan O'Brien becuase both shows are now avaliable for download for your iPod on iTunes.
Not only are these two late night shows on iTunes, but heaps NBC's other hit shows including Monk, Law & Order, The Office and of course...Knight Rider. These shows can be bought of the iTunes music store for the same USD$1.99 that people have been paying previously for other shows such as Desperate Housewifes and LOST.
Apple seems to be slowly getting a bigger collection of television shows which is a good thing for Apple and seems to be paying off for them. In a recent article on Mediaweek it is noted that Apple has had more than 3 million video downloads since the video iPod launch.
Just a quick post for today, but anybody interested in watching TV shows on your iPod should definately check out the iTunes music store right now.

Monday TechQuestions #5
12.12.05 (12:46 pm) [edit]
|
Q: Hey, this is a fairly simple question I guess, but have wondered this for a while. What is the difference between DVD+R and DVD-R when it comes to recordable DVD's? Danielle - Sydney, Australia.
A: Well thanks heaps Danielle for your question. This I know does seem like a fairly simple question, but many people don't really know what the difference is between DVD+/-R so a great question Danielle to point this one out.
DVD+R and DVD-R's are pretty much the exact same thing. They are both recordable DVD's which can only be written to once (just like CD-R's). The only thing that really differs it that Sony originally came up with DVD-R disks and some other company (can't really remember the name) came up with DVD+R's. They are just different naming schemes from different companies. DVD-R is traditionally endorsed by Sony, Philips, Yamaha, HP just to name a few.
Such a great question, simple but something not many people I guess take notice of. Thanks for all your questions so far guys, keep them coming they are much appreciated.

Kevin and Alex investigate a Japanese toilet
12.10.05 (2:58 pm) [edit]
Kevin Rose & Alex Albrecht of Diggnation were in Japan recently for diggnation episode #23 and must say, for those who don't know what I'm talking about and have no clue what diggnation is, check out digg.com.
Digg is essentially a social bookmarking and news site that allows users to post interesting new stories to the site and their podcast (vidcast also) diggnation is a roundup of the week's top stories. As I was saying, Kevin and Alex were in Japan filming diggnation ep.#23 and they came across something very interesting and I guess cool about Japanese culture. Toilets are tech'd out! Check out this flash movie of their adventures of toilet discovery.
I know, this one was a quick one, but I just had to share this with you guys, very weird, but does have a slight technology aspect to it also lol.

Dharma to bring MacOSX apps to Windows
12.09.05 (6:22 am) [edit]
|
In a recently posted rumor on macrumors.com, it is stated that Apple Computer may bring back their lost 'Yellow box' project back from the grave and call it Dharma.
Initially, Yellow box would have been a development environment that would allow developers who write applications for MacOS to also distribute that same application to Windows based PC's with a standard unififed universal binary which is compiled thanks to Yellow Box. This project was ditched sometime ago.
Supposedly now, Apple are now in the works of bringing Yellow Box back to life with a new name 'Dharma'. Why this project is called Dharma I have no idea, (probably for similar reasons why the Apple Lisa was called 'Lisa') but if this rumor is true, we should expect to see a huge surge in MacOSX applications as this project will give more incentives for developers to develop under Apple. Programmers won't be restricted as to which system they 'have to' develop for and instead, writing a MacOS app will also mean using that same app under Windows will now be possible.
I thought this was quite interesting for all those who believe that Mac users don't get enough decent software, this (if true) will surely turn the tide.

Advertisements and Previews plague movies these days
12.07.05 (5:06 pm) [edit]
I came across an article here on USAToday which talks about how temendous volumes of advertising before a film will be a more common in years to come, with as much as 20 mins of ads before the beginning of the start of the movie.
This is absolutely ridiculous and I have experienced it first hand recently also. Last friday night, I went out with a few friends to see Domino (which was a pretty great movie) but what really pissed us off was having to sit through like 15 minutes of previews anyway before it started. I do believe that this is becoming a problem that should be reviewed quickly. Its not only the US and Australian (I live in Australia for those who don't know) movie go'ers who have to tolerate this, I've heard it happening in Canada, UK, other parts of Europe also.
Sure its only 15 - 20 mins of ads and previews, and it could be tolerated I guess, but ticket prices should at least be reduced to compensate for this and give people a little reimbursement. I found this article so interesting and I had experienced it first hand recently so thought I'd bring it up.
Thanks guys!

Monday TechQuestions #4
12.06.05 (7:01 am) [edit]
|
Q: Have I got a winner for you.
A few months ago I downloaded "download accelerator plus" (DAP) It worked ok for a while, and there was no spy or ad ware that i found, but i uninstalled it for other reasons, mostly to save disk space, and it wasnt exactly wowing me, although it was making a slight improvement.
Well, while it was installed it integrated itself with my firefox browser. Now that it is uninstalled, firefox will not download anything ever.
HERE is the kicker: It is still in my sytem after... *one reformatting *uninstalling and reinstalling firefox twice *changing operating systems
and I acnNOT find the file to delete. -d!
A: Well thank you d! for your question and I must say, this is a very interesting one. The problem that your having is that when you installed Download Accelerator, it integrated itself within Firefox and now you can't remove the integration right? This is very interesting becuase you noted that you have even formatted your computer, uninstalled the applications in question and even changed operating systems.
Option 1 - If you format your computer, all information on hard disks is completely wiped clean erasing any remnants of these two applications which should have fixed your problem. Option 2 - You uninstalled Firefox twice. Uninstalling the application should have remove this problem but also uninstalling Download Accelerator would have helped also then reinstall firefox, but if you took Option 1 before hand, you shouldnt need to do this. Option 3 - Changing Operating Systems. Doing this will require your hard drive to be formatted, hence all drive information will be lost, hence your problem will be gone. When you load your new operating system (Im guessing another version of Windows) you won't have any applications installed becuase of the format. So just install Firefox again without Download Accelerator.
Even the 2nd Option SHOULD (note the should) have fixed your problem by removing both applications, but when you remove these two applications, you needed to be sure to check their respective folders in Program Files to make sure no more rouge files were left behind after the uninstall. One last thing that could be causing your problems using Option 2 would be registry entries. Possibly when you uninstall these two applications, registry entries still exist and hence when you reinstall them, they still remember all the settings from previous installations. This is where either Options 1 or 3 would help and definately work.
I really hope that was useful to you. When you initially told me about this, I was completely blown away at why it was still behaving in the way you were describing after formatting and OS reinstallation, just didn't make much sense. Thank you very much d! for your question.

Putfile.com hangs Singaporian users
12.05.05 (4:21 pm) [edit]
File upload website putfile.com a few days ago released a statement following the execution of an Australian citizen by the Singapore government after repeated attempts for clemency made by the United Nations.
The statement made by putfile outlines that they will cease to provide its services to any user from Singapore based on the following events.
extract from the statement: "Whilst Putfile is not a human rights campaigning organization, we believe that if a country must have the death penalty, there is no need for it be barbaric. It is enough of a punishment, and a deterrent, to take someone's life in a painless manner, without having to be barbaric about it."
I myself am an Australian and the recent execution of Mr. Van Nguyen has been all over the news here, making headlines across the country. I can understand where putfile is coming from and that they are trying to voice their opinions on the death penalty in other countries, but I don't believe that it was the right thing to do to punish millions of Singaporians who were not directly involved in the execution.
This was a matter for the Singapore government, a company can't just come to the conclusion that becuase they think it was the wrong thing to do, all people from Singapore are bad people, becuase that's just not true.
Hopefully putfile review their statements and allow singapore access to this ever popular file uploading service on the internet.
P.S - Watch out tomorrow for Monday TechQuestions #4.

Love Music? Free legal MP3 downloads
12.04.05 (10:03 am) [edit]
Love listening to music and want it to be free? Everybody wants free music and it looks like we all have a great source in which to get it.
I came across an excellent list of free downloadable music sites on gHacks the other day across the net with no subscription fees and all the best free music you want. When I say free, i'm not saying that this is music that has been pirated and shared illegally, free as in free of charge, free of royalties and freely downloadable without breaking any laws. I guess this is possible becuase 80-90% of the music on these sites is by indy bands and musicians with their own record labels.
Some of these sites do offer music from commercial bands but only in streamed form, other 'downloadable' music is from more independent bands. Still, i've checked out some of the stuff on these sites and even though they aren't commercial bands, some are still pretty good.
Free is always a good thing, so check out the list and happy listening.
P.S: Stay tuned for tomorrow's Monday TechQuestions, got an interesting question with hopefully a helpful answer for you guys. Thanks.

A fork in the road - The future of console gaming
12.03.05 (9:03 am) [edit]
|
Atari founder Nolan Bushnell was very vocal on his opinions on the gaming industry these days and how companies like Sony develop controllers that are just "too complex..." to use with all the X's O's and shoulder buttons. According to a recent blog on Gizmodo, he feels that people are developing interface phobia.
He goes on to talk about what Nintendo are doing with their new concept for their Revolution controller and how great an idea it is. I personally feel that Nintendo are doing great things these days for the gaming industry, trying out new and interesting ideas without worry of failure or public pressure. I don't really think that any kind of 'phobia' is a problem with followers of the Playstation 2 (the PS2 is THE highest selling console around these days).
i've felt for some time now that the gaming industry really needs a new kick or jumpstart to bring us back to the hayday of gaming (good old SNES days). The look and feel of games has changed so much over these last 10 years with graphical power growing exponentially over this period. Its a good thing we have spent the time developing better graphical engines to get our games looking better, but I think we've pretty much got it down-pat. We should spend more time now on gameplay and making a game that is as much fun to play as the graphics look.
Sony and Microsoft I think make great games, but many of them have been made with better looking graphics in mind over solid gameplay, but solid gameplay is what a game should be about in the first place right?. I myself own a PS2 (and love it mind you) so I can relate to whats been happening in the industry.
I feel that Nintendo are the only 'true' company around these days that haven't thrown gameplay in the backseat over graphics and will be very interesting to see what they come up with for this next generation. I must admit, Nintendo haven't had the best image over the life of the gamecube with people calling it "a toy for kids" and so forth, but I do believe that they are starting to shake that image and have become a real contender in the gaming market, especially with the huge success of the Nintendo DS.
Developers for the PS3 and XBox 360 really need to take a look around, many of them have been developing some great games (God of War, Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid 3), but the future of gaming I think is GAMEPLAY GAMEPLAY GAMEPLAY!!!
lol, well that's my two cents thrown in. Any discussion or comments i'll be looking forward to reading on the topic. Thanks guys!
