DirectX 10 on the way
12.01.05 (1:26 pm) [edit]
Microsoft DirectX is a set of low-level application programming interfaces (APIs) which allow programmers to create games on the windows platform.
Many PC gamers are aware that when you install a new game on a windows machine, many games require a particular version of DirectX for that game to run properly. DirectX 9 has been in use for quite along time and now with the impending release of Windows Vista, DX10 will ship giving developers new opportunities to create better games.
DX10 isn't without its apparent downsides. An excerpt from softpedia reads " Microsoft has decided that backward compatibly with DirectX 9,8,7 isn't really necessary as there will probably will be even less compatible with Vista". What this means is that if people are happy with their current PC's running directX 9 on Windows XP and want to upgrade to Vista when it ships, if their current video cards are not DX10 compatible (which they probably aren't) they will have to upgrade to take advantage of new features and avoid compatibility problems.
The general feeling of Windows Vista so far in my opinion is a pretty positive one. I am looking forward to seeing what Microsoft will come up with in the final build of Vista, but cutting out backwards compatiblity will surely piss some people off.

XBox 360 Mods, how cool are these...
11.30.05 (9:39 am) [edit]
I myself was thinking about getting an XBox 360 but still not quite sure what Sony are doing with the PS3 and if it will be any good, so still tossing up between the two I guess.
In the meantime, those of you who did pick up a 360 will really enjoy this one. I was browsing through Llama's Adventures in Xbox 360 and came across an article in which they spent 7 days modding the crap out of a 360. Some really awsome mods such as a side window mod, additional hard drive, awsome blue cathode's and some tricked out mods to the 360's controller. Even the XBox 360's media remote got a cool makeover.
If you are a proud owner of an XBox 360 and are interested in some of these mods, be sure to check this article out. It explains how to do some of these mods, as well as where you can purchase the goods to make it all happen. Granted some people will obviously not be wanting to mod their perfectly working 360 just to 'pretty it up' and risk screwing up their new toy. Be carefull before you do anything if you do want to (disclaimers are all over the article anyway, so i'll just shut up now).
I thought this was really awsome. PC modders have been doing these things for years now but thought it was cool that now consoles gamers are now also getting into modding their boxes. Looks like those PC fanboys modders have a little competition.

PHP Programmers - Open up to a new world
11.29.05 (6:43 pm) [edit]
Im sure heaps of serious PHP programmers out there will already know about this somewhat, but I thought that this it too interesting to pass up to talk about.
Ever wanted to broaden your PHP Programming skills beyond web development? Now you can! This tutorial on John Wiseman's blog outlines how you can modify existing PHP code and also write new applications for Windows in PHP. This is really cool, as many of you know I am a computer science student so programming is pretty much all I do if Im not out somewhere lol.
Just a quick one, but thought i'd share in the coolness that is PHP. I absolutely love PHP with its flexibility and robustness, how can you go wrong. Instead of limiting yourself to web development (which is cool in its self I must say) why not try applying your PHP skills to windows application development and see how you like it.
Thanks guys, and thanks for the great response to my TechQuestion's on Monday's.

Monday TechQuestions #3
11.27.05 (3:02 pm) [edit]
Well, now that I have finally finished my schoolwork for the year, I can now look forward to getting back to my daily (or every 2nd day at least) posts here on my blog.
Q: My comp has been running slow lately...did a scan a pandasoftware..it says I have BrilliantDig..but can't find it anywhere on my comp..I have trendmicro Antispyware...have AntiVir Guard Virus protection, and other stuff..but it just seems since I did the last microsoft updates that I started having problems..any suggestions?..Thanks Technomeister
SweetSue - tBlogger
A: Thanks heaps for your question SweetSue. What I have found with Viruses and especially spyware is that once you get one little piece of it in your computer, then more will surely follow. You could have every scanner and preventative measure in place, but once you get it, it can get very very difficult to fully remove. I would suggest running these applications you have but would also have a look at some others I have found very effective.
One such application that I use alot is called Spybot - Search & Destroy that works really well. If that finds spyware on your computer, it will list it and then it will remove it for you (well try it's best anyway). If you are still finding that your computer is running slow and don't mind formatting, I would strongly suggest it. Formatting your computer will always get rid of any software problems and starting over with a fresh slate is always a good thing. I format my PC's often (like every 3-6 months), especially PC's running Windows.
If you do decide to format, just make sure you back up all of your important data before hand as formatting will wipe the disk clean. Hopefully that was helpful to you somewhat SweetSue, and I do look forward to posting more frequently from now on. YAY! Thanks Guys for your questions.

Monday TechQuestion's #2
11.21.05 (4:21 pm) [edit]
Well guys, I finally got myself a copy of Mario Kart DS and this game truely rocks. Playing online is just awsome and offline there is just so much to do so that will definately keep me busy for a while after I finish all this schoolwork.
As promised, another Monday TechQuestions (#2): Q: I was just wondering, I am currently using a regular 17" CRT monitor on my PC but thinking of getting a new LCD. I don't really want to spend very much but do you think getting a new LCD is worth it?
Jessica, Rockbank - Melbourne Australia
A: Well Jessica, thank you very much for your question. I myself am currently using a Mitsubishi Diamond View 17" Flat Screen CRT monitor and I get by with it, its cool. I also like yourself was thinking about getting a new LCD, but then I thought I may as well keep my CRT becuase you will inheritantly get richer colors with much more depth than an LCD display.
Don't get me wrong LCD's are great, but if you are doing anything on your computer that requires very precise color matching (like tweaking and touching up digital photos) I would recommend sticking with your current CRT as they usually outperform in these areas.
The obvious downside to using a CRT as opposed to LCD's is the monitor's refresh rate on a CRT. You can usually get away with using your monitor with a refresh rate between 70Hz - 80Hz, but anything lower than 70 may start causing your eyes to hurt. If you do wish to spend hours at a time in front of your computer and are getting sore eyes, then go with the LCD.
It's really up to personal preference, but I do enjoy using my CRT as I do quite a bit of digial photography. Hope that helps you somewhat Jessica and thank you for your question.

One week away from finality....well for the year anyway!
11.18.05 (3:57 pm) [edit]
Well I officially only have 1 more week left at Uni for the year and I absolutely cannot wait. As soon as I get this next week over with I will finally have plenty of time to do the things that I really enjoy, like posting on my blog more frequently, shooting some more photos over the break which will be fun...as well as the usual end of year parties and stuff.
Mario Kart DS has been out for a few days but I am yet to get my hands on it. Anybody who reads my blog regularly will know that I have been waiting for that game for so long and to play online will be absolutely amazing. Once I get through this next week, I'll have to get it to satisfy my craving for more mario kart action.
I did however pick up a copy of Resident Evil 4 on the PS2 this week though and I must say that this game rocks! I had played a little RE4 on the Gamecube at a friend's place, but as I don't own a cube, I have savoured the day when it would make it's apperance on my beloved Playstation 2. Anybody who is really into action adventure games with a real twist of horror themes will really enjoy this game. It is similar to previous Resident Evil titles, but some of the more annoying aspects of those games have been removed and with more emphasis on action, and less on puzzle solving craziness lol.
Well, I think that's about it for me today, but remember to check back on Monday with the 2nd installment of Monday's TechQuestions. Until then, happy camping!

iPod Nano Modifications Anyone?
11.15.05 (7:32 pm) [edit]
|
I came across this really interesting article on iPodWizard.net which goes over steps to modify the firmware (v1.0) of the iPod nano to be able to display menu item icons. This is really cool so I thought I'd give it a try.
I followed the article step-by-step and went on to read the in's and out's of how to accomplish this truely awsome thing. I had to make sure I had the correct iPod updater software (correct version and whatever) and I also had to download the relevent files to carry out this mod from the site. I patched the iPod updater with the supplied files, then replaced my iPod's current firmware with this newly created one, and presto....brand new nano menu's.
Now I must point out (and the article also points out) that modifying any part of your iPod firmware will possibly VOID your warranty with Apple so don't try this unless you are absolutely sure on what you are doing and follow the instructions carefully.
This article was written to mod the iPod Nano, but it is pointed out that doing this on any other iPod will probably work also, but do so at your own risk.
Its always fun to tinker with your favourite technology and I think this Menu Icon mod is right up there with Linux for the iPod.

Monday TechQuestion's #1
11.14.05 (8:25 am) [edit]
|
Ok guys, here's the first Monday TechQuestions post ever.
Q: I am thinking of setting up a wireless network in my house as I have 4 computers in total across 3 different rooms. I don't really want to run cables across my whole house, so what wireless networking equipment will I need and what do you recommend? Thanks.
Michael, Melbourne Australia.
A: Well Michael, thanks for your question. I think installing a wireless network is a great idea and will give you a whole new level of flexibility, especially if your using a laptop. By the sounds of it, you are only using desktop PC's which is fine, a wireless network will work great.
To set up a home wireless network, you will need the following: - Wireless router (aka Wireless Acess Point) - Wireless PCI Network Cards for each PC - Network cable (from your router to main PC + internet connection)
I recommend two brands for wireless networking equipment, one being Linksys the other being DLink. The both make pretty good wireless routers and wireless PCI cards for your PC's.
In case you are unsure on how to set up a wireless network, I found a really great article on O'Reilly Wireless DevCenter which should help you out.

I have my new camera, and a Flickr Photo Collection
11.12.05 (6:32 pm) [edit]
|
As many of you know, a few posts ago I stated that I was going to get a new digital camera, well I have it now, YAY!
Photography is a great hobby of mine and anytime I get some free time, you'll probably catch me out and about snapping away. I have been meaning to get around to starting an account with Flickr which for anybody who doesn't know is an online photo storage and sharing site where people from all over can view any photos you have uploaded to your collection, or just so you can better organize yourself.
I was playing around with my new camera today and decided to mess around with the aperture and shutter speeds to get some cool pics, and I uploaded the best one to my flickr photo collection. The collection only has that one image at the moment, but in the next few days I'll be going out to shoot the Melbourne Springtime :).
Finally got a new camera which is great, have needed a new 'tool' for a while & anybody interested in what I'm shooting, be sure to bookmark my photo collection at Flickr. I highly recommend Flickr to anybody who has a photo collection they want to share or just organize better, and all you need is a current YahooID or just sign-up for a flickr account. So Easy!
Thanks Guys, until next time...
P.S - Sorry for the late post, I will be finishing up school for the year in the next fortnight so then you'll be able to read more of me :) and be sure to check back on Monday's TechQuestions for your technology questions answered.

Hide your identity on the net?
11.09.05 (5:07 am) [edit]
|
I know a few friends and fellow students from some of my classes that will do almost anything to hide their identities whilist their on the internet in an attempt I'm assuming to cut any connection with their name to what they are doing. Trust me people I know aren't the only one's deliberately providing false or misleading information to hide themselves on the internet.
According to a recent study of Canadian Teenagers, 6 out of 10 teens "are disguising their identities on the Internet". This article on globe and mail pretty much covers what I'm talking about here. From experience in using IRC (Internet Relay Chat) I have definately noticed many people experimenting with their age for example, making themselves look older or younger and most times its just people's curiosity about what other people think about you when your just a bit older or younger (social experiment I guess lol).
This article then goes on to say "We should not get too hysterical about it, because there's some developmental stuff that is happening that is totally typical of the age group" . I think this is crazy becuase not only teenagers are doing this, but I've seen adults also doing this aswell.
I don't think that disguising your identity is a bad thing, but people do make it out to be bad for some reason (well some people anyway). I think its a great idea becuase people want to increase their level of security anyway they can when they're online, however I do see the importance of accuate information in some circumstances so people should be aware.
With the increasing numbers of victims of identity theft these days, its no wonder why people are resorting to hiding their personal information.

New digital camera coming my way!
11.03.05 (4:28 pm) [edit]
|
Hey guys, thought i'd share something with you guys for today's post. Digital photography is a relatively new hobby of mine taking it up a few months ago and I have been able to achieve some pretty good looking photos, but now in the next week or 2, i'll have a new addition to my photography arsenal, a shiny new digital camera.
I have been looking at the FujiFilm FP S3500 4.23 megapixel Digital-SL R camera and I think I'm going to go with it, its a greally great camera with great image quality and customization on this camera is a big plus. Here are the specs:
FujiFilm FP S3500 Digital SLR Camera

4.23 million pixel CCD
6X optical zoom lens (39 – 234mm, 35mm equivalent)
Programmed auto exposure
Auto, red–eye, forced, suppressed and slow sync flash modes
Movie capture (320 x 240 pixel) movie mode
High quality 1.5 inch TFT (62,000 pixel) LCD screen
xD–Picture Card™ compatible
Webcam facility
This camera will be great and I can't wait to see what it can do. Well I just thought that I'd share that with you guys for today, after all it is technology related nonetheless lol.
