| Wanna run MacOS 7 on your PSP? |
| 10.01.05 (5:02 pm) [edit] |
This is very very cool. Anybody interested in the Mac OS Operating System and homebrew PSP hacks should definately check this one out.
Neisha (with a surname ungiven, yes girls can hack too) had stumbled across a way to get MacOS 7 running on a Sony PSP. Actually getting it all set up and running isn't quite as easy or as fast to do as you might think. With all the setting up and configuring it took her around 40 mins from start to finish, but booting the OS is a completely different story, try 4hrs.
Of all the homebrew hacks ive seen on the PSP, this one is definately one of the more complicated ones, but very cool and interesting at the same time. What she did was run an x86 emulator on her PSP which in tern was running a 680x0 emulator so that MacOS 7 would run. lol. On the link above she has listed all the steps required to make this happen as well as a list of software required to carry out this extraordinary achievement.
Half way through reading her article, where she's listed all the software required for the hack, she said that you can download MacOS 7 directly from Apple's FTP Servers which is really cool, I didn't think apple kept older versions of MacOS on FTP as a freely downloadable source. If your interested in previous versions of MacOS, try this link and let us know.
This is so very interesting and it would be cool to be walking around whilst using MacOS 7.

| Be like Bond & use your watch |
| 09.30.05 (5:22 pm) [edit] |
EVERY new car these days has some kind of keyless entry mechanism to unlock your car, no matter what car you drive, keyless entry is pretty much standard. Well, not anymore.
Toyota have just unveilled their newest toy so you can show off to your friends and pretend your Bond....James Bond. I stumbled across an article here on engadget, outlining new wristwatch released by Toyota in conjunction with Oris Timepieces is a new watch under the "Big Crown" Collection that has more functionality that just your average watch. This new watch will unlock your car wirelessly with the push of a button, or if your close enough to your car, you will be able to start your car with the watch also. Very cool.
This would be so cool, but you'd think it would open up all kinds of security issues which need to be safeguarded against for a system such as this to be widely implemented. Since it would use radio waves to transmit data from the watch to the car, those radio waves could be picked up by practically anything, and with the hardware hackers have avaliable these days, they instead could be Wardriving for wireless cars to crack, not wireless Networks.
The technology is surely here to be able to produce a product such as this, and will be interesting to see what else Toyota come up with along these lines in the future. All the watch needs now is a laser lol!

| Test your geekiness! |
| 09.29.05 (10:36 pm) [edit] |
I stumbled across a "Geek" quiz on BBC News' website which tests to see exactly how much of a geek you really are. Questions such as "What is Javascript?" and what DRM stands for.
Taken this really isn't a very serious quiz, still quite funny nonetheless. This simple quiz has been created on the notion that these days, it is becoming increaingly difficult for the average consumer too keep up with the latest technology jargon going around, leading to uncomprehensible confusion.
After taking the quiz, you are presented with a score out of 9 (there are 9 questions total) and given a ranking based on your performance. I was happy, I scored 9 on the test "Excellent, you have the makings of a proper propeller head" was my ranking phrase lol.
These day's it seems like there's new technology released each day, so no wonder some people feel computers are a burden. Check out the geek test here to test your geekiness. Who knows, maybe one day you'll have the makings of a proper propeller head.... lol.

| Building a killer gaming PC |
| 09.28.05 (10:44 pm) [edit] |
|
I came across an article on Extreme Tech's website which discusses their attempt at building the ultimate gaming PC. I've taken a look at the specs of this machine and trust me, this rig is so ULTIMATE that you'll wet your pants.
Consisting of an AMD Athlon64 FX-57 CPU, 2GB RAM,2 x BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC 256MB Water Cooled video cards (SLI) amongst many other jaw dropping pieces of hardware. I've seen a lot of people build 'the ultimate gaming machine' before, but this really takes the cake for me.
All the specs are listed in Extreme Tech's article found here along with each hardware component's retail price. You could go out and buy yourself everything they used, but will set you back at just under USD$7,000 for this beast. Well we can all dream can't we?

| See that MySQL error to the left, don't worry it'll be gone soon |
| 09.27.05 (4:05 pm) [edit] |
|
Hey guys, I know what your thinking. Your thinking what the hell is happening on my blog with this stupid MySQL error. Usually in the place of that error is where it display's the current user that is logged in, but my host tblog is having some problem and are working on it, don't worry.
It's really bad becuase my entire blog layout is all screwed up becuase of this, but hopefully tblog get themselves into gear and figure out what the hell is going on. I know some other people who have their blogs hosted on tblog.com that are having the same problem, so the problem isn't just with me, its more widespread I think.
Hopefully the problem will be solved soon and all will be back to normal soon. Just stick through it with me guys! lol.

| Microsoft admits Windows is officially "broken" |
| 09.26.05 (1:15 pm) [edit] |
|
"Windows is broken and Microsoft has admitted it. In an unprecedented attempt to explain its Longhorn problems and how it abandoned its traditional way of working, the normally secretive software giant has given unparalleled access to The Wall Street Journal, even revealing how Vice President Jim Allchin, personally broke the bad news to Bill Gates." - Smart Office News Australia.
When I read this article, I just couldn't belive it. Well I knew (and most windows users) that windows has its problems and all the problems that Longhorn has been having throughout its development, but Microsoft actually admitting to this was I think a major step for the software company. Microsoft doesn't usually fess up to its problems with its products, usually keeping quite on the subject whilst attempting to fix the problem.
One such problem Microsoft has been having with Longhorn is the new WinFS filesystem which would allow users to search and organise their files in a way much different to today's NTFS. WinFS has had so many problems that quote:"engineers began talking about whether they could make the 'pig fly'".
Im my opinon, Microsoft at the moment is just one big jumbled up mess. CEO Steve Ballmer last week reshuffled the company into three major business units in an attempt to give the company a better ability at producing software with greater efficiency and effectiveness.
With all these problems that Longhorn (aka Vista) has been having, and the feeling of complete disfunction within the company leaves me weary about the company's future. Their competition has never been greater apon a new Windows release with MacOSX more popular than ever and with numerous linux distros gaining ground, Microsoft will surely be feeling the pressure to produce the goods. If they don't, I think that it could be the end of an era for the company.

| iPod nano screen scratches more than a DJ! |
| 09.24.05 (9:15 am) [edit] |
A few days ago (wednesday to be precise) I went to the Apple store here in Melbourne and picked myself up an iPod nano. I absolutely love this new product and with the myriad of new features over its predecessors (plus its great looks, so tiny) I succumed to temptation and bought one.
I've been using it more or less every day since wednesday, but yesterday I checked out the Apple discussions support page regarding the nano scratching problem and noticed that fellow iPod nano purchasees were having problems with their screens getting all scratched up whilst in their pockets amongst change, keys and so forth. mmm, everytime i've had my nano im my pocket, its been fine and I haven't had any problems, but my nano has been the only thing in the pocket so maybe thats why. Many people are posting to the discussions page saying that their screens are getting nicks and scratches from various articles residing in the pockets along side the nano.
I am very weary about this new problem that has arisen, almost paranoid at looking after my beloved nano, but I haven't had any problems with the way i'm treating mine.
If there are any iPod nano users out there who are experiencing these scratching problems should take it back to their nearest apple store. I called mine and they said that although apple doesn't have a policy on these new issues as yet, they will be happy to exchange it for you, so maybe that's something you could try. And if you get it exchanged, try what I am doing with my nano, when u keep it in ur pocket, make sure the nano is the only thing in there (leave your keys and change in other pockets) it seems to work well.
I am a little dissapointed at the measures new nano owners need to take to look after their new investements and Apple really need to address this issue quickly, and when they do fix it, maybe offer free exchanges to the new (updated) nano with better material. I am still very careful as to where and what I do with my nano, and my 'analism' (if thats really a word) seems to be paying off.
You just gotta be careful thats all.

| Steve Jobs pissed with Microsoft, thats new! |
| 09.22.05 (10:01 pm) [edit] |
Apple CEO Steve Jobs is noted in saying at Apple's European Expo in Paris a few days ago that "Microsoft is copying us with its Operating System...". Steve is also angered at recent products produced my Dell computers saying that their new hardware is a direct copy of Apple's style.
Its fair enough that Steve wants to voice his anger at these two major companies in the industry and I really do agree with him on this one. I have heard many people say how similar Windows Vista looks to the MacOS with the whole new glass panel effects and fading effects and so forth. A quote from Steve sums this up really well, "we'd like to not give them a map and show them where we're going to go. At least they can follow our taillights."
When he made this comment, it was noted in an article on Tom's hardware Guide (read it, its interesting) and other sources that somehow (and I maybe wrong) that Dell &/or Microsoft are finding out what Apple are up to before any major release of ideas, and these giants are pouncing on them in advance. This is where the road map and taillights quote is derrived from.
Microsoft has been pumelling Apple ever since the mid-late 80's over aspects of various products. I remember reading some history of Microsoft and Apple, when Ste ve Jobs and his co-founder Steve Wozniak came across an excellent GUI developed by XEROX and purchased it, Microsoft had been trying to copy it whilst calling it something else.
I have been a big Jobs fan for a while (with Apple always coming up with ingenious new products) but I think Steve has a right in saying that Microsoft are copying them once again, it sure does seem like it. Microsoft should get busy with their own work, and come up with new stuff that nobody has ever seen before, then Steve will be happy that firstly he's getting left alone by Bill Gates, and two, Microsoft arent 'stealing' ideas again like (in my opinion) they did back in the 80's with Windows.
That's my 2 cents on this whole subject. I am by no means an Apple fanboy or anything. Up until a few years ago, I was a slave to Microsoft using Windows, but now I am a happy Linux user. I do own a Mac Mini though, and I just love it.

| Wanna see a BIG computer? |
| 09.22.05 (6:30 am) [edit] |
The guys at Zurich University have been quite busy in recent months with this mammoth creation. This is super computing to the max, Named the "zBox, running 288 AthlonXP 2200+ Cpu's (@1.8GHz each) which equals total combined processing power of around 518.4GHz.
This super computer was designed in house in the labs of Zurich University(well known around the world for their computer science & technology labs). The amazing thing about this beast is that it doesnt draw much more than 45kW of electricity which is "about equivalent to 45 electric hair dryers operating continuously".
The zBox also doesnt skimp on storage capacity either, sporting an impressive 11TB of data storage space (11,000GB for perspective). This thing really needs to be seen to be believed, any computing hobbiest will go nuts looking at this. Be sure to check out the document (with images) here at the University of Zurich's website for more information.

| What do developers think of Nintendo's new controller? |
| 09.21.05 (11:35 am) [edit] |
Nintendo this past week had revealed their highly anticipated new look controller for their next gen console the Nintendo Revolution. Me personally, I think that this is a controller that people will either love or hate. I think it's a good idea that nintendo are trying new things like they always do, but I just don't see how a controller such as this will fit with all those gamers out there.
So, I can hear all those Nintendo fanboys out there just saying, "Well give it a chance, what the hell do you know". Well they have the right to their own opinion. But what exactly do game developers think of this 'revolution' of a controller? revolutionreport.com has an article interviewing many high profile persons from various game developers such as UbiSoft, Epic Games, EA & Konami just to name a few.
The general feeling I got from reading these interviews is that most developers are generally not worried as such with the new controller, most think it will be something new and different to work with, but some are just not quite convinced at how feasible it will be, but really only time will tell.
Before Nintendo announced this new controller, I was thinking it would be similar to the style of the cube controller in that you would actually hold (with 2 hands) a controller but buttons like we've all come to know. Then I saw what they had unveilled at TGS 05' and I was simply amazed. Not amazed at how awsome or ingenious the idea was, but at how weird it first seemed.
I'm not going to pass any more judgement on the new controller until the console launches and I can see it (and feel it) for myself, that should keep those fanboys happy. If you want to read the interviews of each developer's opinons on the new controller, just check out the article

| Pure Pwnage episode #8 released |
| 09.20.05 (9:57 am) [edit] |
|
Pure Pwnage is an online series which tells the story of a 'pro' gamer by the name of Jeremy and all the 'noobs' that he owns! I have been a big fan of the series since the very first episode back in May and have seen all episodes up to the most recent which is episode #8 which has finally released yesterday.
Episode 8 tells the story of Jeremy & his now good friend Doug(aka.fps_doug) hanging out playing Nintendo, and entering a LAN tournament by the name of 'LANAGEDDON' in which Jeremy & Doug play Counter Strike Source tournament style facing many 'noob' opponents in the process, before they both encounter another 'pro' gamer by the name of DeadStryker6666.
Pure Pwnage is a very funny series, I have talked about the series before here on my blog, but you really need to check it out for yourselves at www.purepwnage.com & download episode 8 (or why not all of them while your at it lol).

| Finally, a laptop shipping with Linux |
| 09.19.05 (12:55 pm) [edit] |
September 16th was a very exciting day for Mandriva (formerly known as mandrake) as they issued a press release outlining that Dell have made a avaliable a new laptop pre-loaded with Mandriva Linux.
The Dell Latitude 110L laptop will ship with Mandriva Linux Limited Edition 2005 pre-installed, has wifi capability, various CPU's ranging between 1.4Ghz to 1.7Ghz for the mobile Celeron or Pentium M with 256MB to over 1GB of RAM. This is really something major for the linux community. People are finally realizing the potential of linux that can be provided to the consumer market & with Mandriva's ease-of-use makes it a great package for people looking for a low cost, high performance notebook.
The 110L will retail for around ~US$940 which makes it great for college students on a budget, and not only are you getting a top notch OS, pre packaged is the Open Office suite (say goodbye to Microsoft Office), games, video & mp3 playback, pretty much everything and anything that Linux can provide to its user, for way less than a Microsoft based laptop.
For the complete press release, visit this link.

| iPod Linux now with video support |
| 09.18.05 (5:34 pm) [edit] |
|
The team at iPod Linux have been working on a video capability for the iPod for quite some time and actually got video to work on an iPod a few months ago, but with no sound. These guys now have cracked the problem and sound is now possible with video playback on an iPod running the iPod linux OS.
I found a blog by the name of DansFloyd which is a technology and iPod linux featured blog and he goes over some of this new capability, but this is the only source I have come across that this new video & audio support on an iPod actually exists, I'll have to keep looking around for a more solid source.

| CNET's Top 10 Worst Technology Products |
| 09.17.05 (8:30 pm) [edit] |
All over the internet you'll see thousands after thousands of TOP 10 GREATEST GAMES/OS's/devices articles, but very few sources actually compile a list (and in dept too!) of some technology products that we were happy to forget about, the top 10 worst products of course.
CNET have recently taken a look back at some of the worst, and I mean worst (Microsoft Bob ring any bells?) computer technology products from the past decade or two. This list is actually quite in depth, and is interesting to revisit some of the products that we love to hate. Just a few products that made it into cnet's top 10 worst include:
- Microsoft Bob (@ no.1 of course!) - Microsoft Windows ME - The Furby - PocketMail (portable email device? why not just use a phone!)
Just to name a few.
Mmm, I had a product in my head that should have made it to this list, but forgot. Hopefully it'll come back to me lol. There's a question for all you guys, if you had a top 10 worst technology products list, which would be your no.1? Post your comments, many people im sure will be interested to see what other crap has come out that most of us have forgotten about (i'm surely one of them).
So the Top 10 Worst Technology releated products eh, maybe someone should do a TOP 10 of all the TOP 10 articles out there. LOL, that would be interesting to see.

| Trade your dual monitor for this beast! |
| 09.16.05 (9:52 am) [edit] |
This thing is absolutely amazing. Athens have been around for a while now building these monstrous monitors and many people have talked about them in blogs and reviews across the globe.
Any fans of dual monitors would go crazy if they had their very own Athens display. I can talk forever about a kick ass monitor (well monitors) but you just need to check out the images of this beast. All 5 LCD widescreen panels produce a monster 19200x2400 resolution in total, combining into one super large viewing area. Models ranging from the 110" right up to the 200" will set you back quite a significant amount (some reason no prices are noted on their website) i'm guessing.
The monitors have future upgradability with bluetooth wireless and by looking at the actual display unit, you'll need quite a large area in your house to keep this baby. I would absolutely love to get my hands on one of these, but ill probably need a 2nd job or something to pay for it lol. Remember to check out the images, this is a must see.

| Windows Vista's 7 children |
| 09.14.05 (9:24 am) [edit] |
With recent news of Microsoft's newest Operating System Windows Vista retailing with as many as seven different versions, sparks are flying from many Microsoft critics about the legitimacy of the software giants closer domination of the world with its market flooding strategies.
John Dvorak goes over this new Microsoft phenonenon in his new article for PC Mag, saying that if Microsoft is going to be releasing 7 different versions of vista (if these rumors are true) then why not add a couple more to the array of OS's. Many sources around the internet have these releases of vista noted as Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Small Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate. That's right, ULTIMATE!
From my opinion, why the hell do you need that many versions of essentially the same operating system. Initially when Windows XP shipped with its Home and Professional versions, people were weary about just 2 versions, now with Vista having a possible 7 different versions, the risk of completely flooding the OS market and causing consumer confusion would be greater than ever.
Fair enough Microsoft are trying to cater for a wide variety of its customers from the home user up to the corporate market, but in those names of Vista's various products, 4 out of the 7 stand out as corporate or business products (Professional, small Business, Enterprise and Ultimate).
WHY Microsoft WHY! Im no marketing genius, but If I was Bill Gates I would release Vista with at most 3 different versions, an OS for the Home User, a corporate or enterprise edition and an Ultimate (looking for a better name) edition for the high-end user.
I think if Vista ships with 7 different versions, ill think its a crazy idea, but probably get used to it relatively quickly. It just seems like the most stupid idea now. But for less experienced PC users or even an intermediate user, the sheer number of choices put forward by Microsoft could seriously make things more confusing for comsumers than they already are.

| Google search results returning what you don't want? |
| 09.14.05 (9:05 am) [edit] |
|
Sure, Google has become one of the most popular and widely used search engine to date. Millions and millions of people use it everyday to find what they are looking for, but Im sure everybody has experienced entering a search string and getting results completely off course.
I found a great link at a site called googleguide.com which lists some really great ways to get more out of your search on google. One thing I really like about the site is that they list all the operators you can use on google such as the filetype: and define: operators which will return results only of filetypes of definitions. There are hundreds of these which make your google searching a whole lot easier.
Granted the fact that many people have been aware of google's operators for quite some time, I still get asked by newbie googler's "I can't find it, what did you type in?"
Even though there are probably billions of sites on google these days, this site will really get you to were your looking quickly and easily. Check out tips and a list of operators at googleguide.com

| Dvorak.org categorized as sex-oriented? |
| 09.13.05 (3:58 pm) [edit] |
John C Dvorak - PC Mag columist (amongst other things) has had his blog at dvorak.org/blog categorized by websense as quote: 'sex oriented' mistakenly. I am a big fan of John's blog and am a regular visitor, but today he posted news that his blog has been mistakenly (or maybe not?) categorized by websense into a category that just doesn't make sense regarding the content he has.
John goes into it more here at his blog which includes a screenshot from websense illustrating his 'weird' categorization. I wonder how many more people have had their blogs mistakenly categoriz ed. I know this may not sound like such a big deal, but John's blog had been TOTALLY banned from viewing right across the USA.
Hopefully nothing bad will come out of this, I am a big fan of his blog but it looks like he will have a significant drop in visitors for today.

Wow, this is cool. A new Final Fantasy movie entitled Final Fantasy:Advent Children' is coming out. News of its pending release has been all over the internet the last month or so, but recent news has told us that a DVD quality 'leak' has been floating around on bittorrent for download. I haven't downloaded it, but sources tell me that the video is encoded in Xvid and the quality is 'excellent' if not DVD quality with a relatively small download size of 709MB.
Check out the details of Final Fantasy Advent Children leak here.

| Doom Movie Poster |
| 09.11.05 (2:32 pm) [edit] |
Well, another step to the Doom movie has just been finished, the design and release of the official movie poster of course! Take a look at the poster. As you can see the poster and in deed the movie plays on the whole feel of a First Person Shooter, and supposedly many camera angles in the movie will be in the same style as a FPS with the gun to the lower right of the screen lol.
I really hope this movie doesn't suck. I love all the Doom games and since the movie is relatively close to the storyline of the Doom 3 game, I hope they get it right and don't miss any major plot points or anything.
It seems as though these days big movie studios are into making films based on video games. A few posts below this one, I talked about a new movie TBA which is based upon I think one of the best games on the PS2, God of War.
Films based on games generally tend to suck, so hopefully Doom and God of War are notable exceptions to current trends.

| What about a movie based on God of War? |
| 09.10.05 (7:28 pm) [edit] |
|
A few months ago I finished quite possibly one of the greatest games to ever grace the PS2, God of War. As I was playing through the game, the story was one of many things that really hit me as being truely amazing and got thinking why not make this game into a feature film?
well, my question was answered when Universal picked up the rights to produce the film. Alex Gartner will be the producer of God of War who also produced such films as Indecent Proposal, Out of Time and The Upside of Anger.
When I found out about this I was absolutely thrilled, but also weary that usually movie adaptations of games don't do so well, unfortunately sometimes permenantly tarnishing the gaming franchise for good. I really hope this movie doesn't suck becuase it has the potential to be something really great.
No Director or Cast members have been named yet, but fans of God of War might agree with me when I say Vin Diesel could be a great Kratos. If this game were to ever be made into a movie, I'm glad a big name studio such as Universal have it.
Check out more information about the God of War movie here.

| NewsCorp aquires IGN |
| 09.09.05 (11:08 pm) [edit] |
|
Well, it looks like one of our favourite gaming sites has just been bought my media giant News Corporation. The whole idea behind Rupert Murdoch's take over is "IGN acquisition brings the company a long way toward its objective of becoming a leading and profitable Internet presence.”
Other than more possible vists to IGN's site now that NewsCorp own it I don't really see any other plausible reason as to why the company would want to purchase a gaming site. Hopefully this will be benificial for both parties (especially for IGN) but i really hope that it doesnt all turn sour as do most take overs of this kind usually do.
For the complete article, read it here.

| Computing papers i've written |
| 09.09.05 (5:05 pm) [edit] |
|
I am a 2nd year Computer Science student so it's quite obvious that i would be interested to write this sort of stuff (after all, my entire blog is computer technlogy related lol). I used to be a regular writer on my friends programming blog writing an article each week on news, guides or just a few quick tips using a particular language.
In between asessments i have written many things related to computing, one of which a paper below was originally going to be a term paper ended up a full fledged research and review paper entitled "Open Source Databases - A peek into the open source community".
- Linux Migration Gude: Loosing your windows instability problems for good.
- Open Source Databases - A peek into the open source community
I wrote these earlier this year and just came across them on my PC, so though id share them with everyone else in case other people were interested. Feel free to take a look.

You really need to see these screenshots for yourself. No character models have been created yet, but judging by the looks of a few classic maps such as facility, bunker and temple...the mod will be absolutely amazing!

| The future of podcasting through Dvorak's eyes |
| 09.08.05 (10:43 pm) [edit] |
|
John C Dvorak of PCMag has written another great article about his views and opinions on the future of podcasting and how it came to be.
For all you guys who don't know what podcasting is, "Podcasting is making audio files (most commonly in MP3 format) available online in a way that allows software to automatically download the files for listening at the user's convenience" - wikipedia.org.
I am a big fan of podcasting myself and m a subscriber to many podcasts including my beloved TWiT podcast with Leo Laporte, Security Now! with Steve Gibson, diggnation, CommandN and many others. Podcasting has taken off so fast, it hasnt even been around for a whole year yet.
It would be so cool in a few years time to see people walking down the street wih their iPod's in hand, not listening to music, but the excitement that are podcasts. To read John's article, head on over here.

| How easy is it for hackers to do their business? |
| 09.08.05 (2:18 pm) [edit] |
|
A very interesting article on BBC world website detail how VERY easy it is for a hacker to attack an unprotected PC within not minutes, but seconds. Spencer Kelly of BBC world met up with a former hacker and they set up an experiment too see how long it would actually take for somebody to attack an unprotected PC and they track what the attack is exactly doing. This is very interesting stuff. The article also is accompanied by a video clip of this amazing experiment.
This is something any security concious PC user needs to check out (especially windows users).

| Have we seen the last of Zelda? |
| 09.07.05 (6:13 am) [edit] |
It has come to my attention that (from a reliable source) the long awaited Gamecube release of Zelda: Twighlight Princess will be the final installment of The Legend of Zelda on any platform. This information has come straight from Shigeru Miyamoto who is the creator of the popular franchise.
There has been information out on the net regarding a Zelda for Nintendo's next gen the revolution, and this information is not entirely false. Even though there will be NO NEW Zelda title to come, a next gen remake of one of our favourite Zelda'a is in the works.
This is very unfortunate news for all Zelda fans, and all gamers im sure.
For the full story, take a look here.

| Want to install MacOSX 10.4 on ur PC? |
| 09.06.05 (9:45 pm) [edit] |
|
I am a computer science student and about a week ago, my friends and classmates and I were having our regular tech chat before class, where the topic of MacOSX running on the PC came to the table.
My friends had heard about being able to do it, and thought it could be cool to try out. So I thought "yeah, u know I might check into that actually!" I'm sure my friends arent the only one's around who don't really know where to start looking for images of MacOSX x86, so I thought i'd help them out.
I was looking around the web and stumbled across this very interesting (and easy to understand for all u newbs out there) article outlining the very thing I was concerned with which was "Where can someone find an image, and how can it be used to install MacOSX natively?"
So anyone interested in giving MacOSX a try on their PC's should check this article out.

| The History of Adobe Photoshop |
| 09.06.05 (9:33 pm) [edit] |
|
Ever wanted to know how the world's most popular image editing application looked like when it was just an infant? GUIdebook.org take a step back in time for a look at our favourite Image Editor.
From 1990 with the release of Adobe Photoshop 1.0 on the Mac right up to Adobe Photoshop CS2 on Windows XP / MacOSX Tiger in 2005. This application has been around for quite some time (15yrs to be exact) and I'm sure this grandfather has a few more tricks up its sleeve with future releases.
Its just interesting take a look back at where it all began. Mmm, maybe that should be a new weekly segment "Where it all began". We'll see!

| Vista pricing combating piracy |
| 09.05.05 (7:57 am) [edit] |
|
It is a well known fact that many people don't own a legitimate copy of any version of Windows and Microsoft know this all too well.
To combat piracy, Microsoft expect that by reducing the price of their new OS, pirating will become less 'attractive' because of the OS's such low price. It will be expected to retail for around USD$99 (around AUD$150) if Microsoft keep this plan. Microsoft really want to get their users to switch to Vista when it ships, and if they keep the pricing quite high (like WindowsXP $$) many windows users will surely just keep their existing PC's with XP until the end of their life.
By reducing the price, not only is Microsoft quite possibly reducing software piracy (which is a great move) but they also hope that if people will buy Vista at $99, they will be more inclined to upgrade their machines now, instead of in another few years.
I think this is a great idea on Microsoft's part because not only are they going to be wanting to reduce piracy, but remember they have quite the competition these days with linux (which is free, or a small fee).

| Cool WiFi discovery ALL Nintendo DS owners must know |
| 09.04.05 (7:29 pm) [edit] |
|
I recently got my wireless network all set up at home, and have my PC's and my laptop all connected to the network wirelessly (i dont know how i lived without wireless lol).
So it came to me, I have a 802.11g router (backwards compatible with 802.11b), why not I go experimenting with my Nintendo DS WiFi and my new network. With my router sitting there awaiting my DS, i turned my DS on and figured "if i start a wireless task and am running a wifi scanner on 1 of my pc's, then it should find my DS right?" I was right.
I started up Pictochat, entered a room and within seconds, NetStumbler had found my Nintendo DS. It was cool to know that ur DS broadcasts its MAC Address when in pictochat, as well as what channel its on and u can even view traffic to and from the DS.
I know that some people have probably already tried this and I knew it could work, just didn't realise how much information you could find out about the DS wifi thats all, still really cool stuff.

| Ever wanted a handheld Sega Dreamcast? |
| 09.04.05 (7:16 am) [edit] |
This is absolutely amazing. The whole idea behind it is to turn a regular sega dreamcast console into a portable handheld gaming device. Similar concepts have been done before such as portable PSone and a handheld NES, but the cool thing about this one is that at least you'll probably be the only person around with a handheld DC.
You guys absolutely have to check this one out at liksang.com

| The Perfect NAT Router Solution |
| 09.03.05 (9:01 am) [edit] |
|
Steve Gibson of grc.com and co-host of Security Now! has written a truely ingenious paper on NAT Routers, and how best to use them to maximise your security on your lan, WLAN or even just your single PC connected to the internet.
Steve takes you through the very basics first like what a NAT router is ,what it's used for, and the general security a NAT router provides. As it progresses, he gets into more depth and is really a must have resource for any security consious person connected to the outside world. Steve really has a gift when it comes to taking a topic which is quite complex, and dumbing it down for us all to properly understand and grasp.
Well done Steve, keep it up!

| Massive amount of XBox 360 info |
| 09.02.05 (5:40 pm) [edit] |
|
Anything that anybody would like to know about the XBox 360 can easily be answered here at GamesIndustry.biz new summary article for the XBox 360. With Microsoft's impending release of its next gen console the XBox 360 just around the corner, i found myself (as well as many others) wondering "well, what next gen console am I gonna get, maybe XBox 360, but what the hell will be so good about it?"
After reading this article, there were a few points to the console that I found interesting:
- The console can be switched off wirelessly using the media remote - When playing on XBox live, each game gives add ranking stats to ur gamer tag online. - U can now play DVD's on the console if u don't have the remote (unlike XBox 1)
I am thinking about getting a PS3 myself, but i think Microsoft will have better luck this time around with the 360 than they did the XBOX (i am assuming everyone know's microsoft never made a profit off the XBOX).

| Creative Zen Neon got wormed |
| 09.01.05 (6:05 pm) [edit] |
|
Last week, Creative Labs shipped approx 4,000 units of its popular Creative Zen Neon mp3 players to Japan without any knowledge of the Wullik.b worm infection. The infected units were definately not nasty acts of electronic terrorism on Creative's part, it was simply accidental but the worm poses no immediate threat to end users.
A file system file was infected, but since it can only be spread by direct execution, the only way for it to become a problem would be if the user browses the device's file list and clicks on the infected file.
Creative have temporarily suspended shippment of the Zen until the problem can be fixed.
